The channel is a square-shaped tube fabricated from Zircaloy 4. The outer dimensions arc 5,518 inches (14 centimeters) by 5,518 inches (14 centimeters) by 166,9 inches (424 centimeters) long, The reusable channel makes a sliding seal lit on the lower tie plate surface. It is attached to the upper tic plate by the channel fastener assembly, consisting of a spring and a guide, and a cap screw secured by a lock washer. The fuel channels direct the core coolant flow through each fuel bundle and also serve to guide the control rods. 

Heat the intermediate washer and ball bearing in oil to 160-180°F (70-80°C) and push them onto the spindle. Put on the lock washer, screw on the round nut and secure it with the lock washer.

Bend aside the lock washer and unscrew round nut E4. Remove end shield and ball bearing.

If the lock washer is placed on the plug shaft before the white washer, the washer s friction will grab the surface of the barrel and tend to make everything past the black washer not rotate while the plug is turned, causing the plug to tighten when rotated clockwise and loosen when rotated counterclockwise. 

The order of the washers on Teflon plug is important. As described in the previous section, after the plug is inserted in the barrel, the first piece to go on is the plastic washer, followed by the O-ring, which acts as a lock washer. The final piece to go onto the plug is the locking nut.

Special care should be exercised in systems where previous experience has indicated tray vibration problems. When tray vibration is expected, bolted-through tray connections should be used, along with lock washers or self-locking nuts, rather than frictional fastening.

The cost of riveting is lower than that of most other methods of fastening, due to the absence of plain washers, locking washers, nuts or split pins also, the use of self-piercing rivets eliminates the need to predrill holes. Rivets are available in steel, brass, copper and aluminium in a variety of types. The more standard head types used are shown in Fig. 12.11. 

As a wrought alloy in the form of wire and strip containing 5% tin and up to 0.4% phosphorus with the remainder copper, the alloy can be heat-treated. In the heat-treated condition it has good elastic properties as well as corrosion-resistance and is used for springs, diaphragms, clutch discs, fasteners and lock-washers.
