Skin potential response

EDA is divided into tonic (level) and phasic (response) phenomena. Both tonic levels (skin conductance level, skin potential level) and responses (SCR, skin potential response) are of interest working with EDA. They are generated under autonomous nerve control of the active organs of the skin, in particular the sweat glands. [Pg.421]

The skin potential (SP) method measures potential difference between two skin electrodes without current flow. It is the endogenous potential level and response generated by the body itself. Usually the palmar and plantar skin sites are active during a response other sites are passive if the person is relaxed. Both SP electrodes must not be placed on active sites, because if they are equally active no change in potential difference will occur. If both sites are more or less active, the measured potential difference may be small or even with reversed polarity. One electrode is placed at an active site (e.g., the hypothenar), and the other must be at a passive skin site (e.g., the forearm). A number of chimerized, humanized, and one human mAb have now been approved for therapeutic use in humans in the treatment of autoimmunity, malignancy, infection and cardiovascular disease (Table 1). Some of the currently licensed mAb will be discussed here. A much larger number of mAb are currently being evaluated in Phase I, II and III trials. Plasma digoxin levels may decrease when the drug is administered with bleomycin. When bleomycin is used witii cisplatin, there is an increased risk of bleomycin toxicity Pulmonary toxicity may occur when bleomycin is administered with other antineoplastic drugs. Plicamycin, mitomycin, mitoxantrone, and dactino-mycin have an additive bone marrow depressant effect when administered with other antineoplastic drugs. Only a few in vivo dermal toxicity studies have been reported so far. Huczko and Lange [50] evaluated the potential of raw CNTs to induce skin irritation by conducting two routine dermatological tests (patch test on 40 volunteers with allergy susceptibilities and Draize rabbit eye test on four albino rabbits). Koyama etal. [51] showed the biological responses to four different types of carbon nanotubes (SWNTs, two types of MWNTs with different diameters, and cup-stacked carbon nanotubes) after their subcutaneous implantation in mice. Both tests [50, 51] showed no or poor irritation effects. However, the in vitro studies in epidermal cell lines exposed to CNTs, and also a more recent report on the toxic outcomes of topical exposure of mice to SWNTs [46], have raised concerns over these assessments. Clearly, this is an area requiring further scientific evaluation. [Pg.182]

Penicillamine onset may be seen in 1 to 3 months, and most responses occur within 6 months. Early adverse effects include skin rash, metallic taste, hypogeusia, stomatitis, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and dyspepsia. Glomerulonephritis may occur, which manifests as proteinuria and hematuria. Penicillamine is usually reserved for patients who are resistant to other therapies because of the rare but potentially serious induction of autoimmune diseases (e.g., Goodpasture s syndrome, myasthenia gravis). [Pg.52]
