Skid performance

In the transition zone, EHL is still important, but as more water is removed, EHL at the microscale (MEHL) becomes more important, and when the water layer is reduced to molecular levels, another mechanism, BL takes over. Since BL is the main mechanism by which friction is generated in the overall skidding process, any material properties which increase the proportion of BL in the transition zone relative to EHL, i.e., accelerate the transition from EHL to BL, will have an impact on overall skid performance. As discussed above, modulus is an important factor in determining the rate of water removal in EHL. Eor MEHL, it is the modulus on the microscale at the worn surface of the tread that is critical. There is evidence that after a certain amount of normal wear, a significant part of the surface of silica-filled compounds is bare silica, whereas in black-filled compounds, the surface is fully covered by rubber. The difference in modulus between rubber and silica is very large, so even if only part of the worn surface is bare silica, it would make a significant impact on the... [Pg.949]

The overall traction performance will be determined both by the relative size of the three zones, and the level of friction in each zone. Thus, to improve wet-skid resistance, the goals should be to increase the traction zone relative to the squeeze-hlm and transition zones, and to increase the level of frichon in the transition and traction zones. [Pg.949]

The vendor cites the following advantages of the GAC-FBR system a large surface area for biomass attachment high biomass concentrations and the ability to control and optimize biofilm thickness minimal plugging or channeling no off-gas production low hydraulic retention times biomass carrier can be tailored to optimize system performance and skid-mounted units with small footprints are available for most applications. [Pg.526]

Reverse osmosis skids are typically contained within a frame of galvanized or urethane-coated steel. Skids should be designed for easy access for monitoring and maintenance. Access to controls, instruments, valves, the pump and motor, and membranes is essential. Access to the permeate from each pressure vessel is often overlooked. Without such access, profiling and probing used to troubleshoot poor performance is not possible (see Chapter 14.7). [Pg.120]

Marine and Iwdraulic-oil coolers use these characteristics to enhance the coefficient of otherwise poorly performing fluids. The higher metallurgies in marine applications like 90/10 Cu-Ni afford the higher cost of plate-fin design to be offset by the less amount of alloy material being used. On small hydraulic coolers, these fins usually allow one to two size smaller coolers for the package and save skid space and initial cost. [Pg.909]

High-performance lightweight aggregate concrete also has less cracking, improves skid resistance, and is readily placed by the concrete pumping method. [Pg.699]
