A quality management system s process should follow a standard Six Sigma process improvement life cycle that includes the following steps define (process and metrics), measure and control (identify problems and issues), analyze (analyze problems and issues), and improve (implement) circling back to measure and control [11]. To accomplish this, we must collect data. But how we collect that data is as important as the data themselves. Some data are worthless, some are priceless. The conditions and procedures used to find data ultimately determine their value. Statistical quality control (SQC), statistical process control (SPC), total quality management (TQM), and six sigma are all passive approaches to data collection. These procedures only observe and report what is happening. They cannot find the analytical cause-and-effect relationships needed for true process understanding and for controlling the sources of variability.

This means that Cpk — 0.42, which is a very poor value. So poor, in fact, that no client would accept it. Some of the most advanced companies in the world, like Motorola and General Electric, have already established a Cpk value of 2 as the minimum quality standard for their own processes and also for those of their suppliers (Bhote, 1996). To satisfy this demand, a process must be perfectly centered on its nominal specification value, while operating with a standard deviation of not more than 1/12 of the tolerance range. In this situation, only two values out of a billion will fall outside the tolerance limits. It is this goal that is the basis of the quality management movement known as Six Sigma ° (Breyfogle, 1998). 

During the past three decades, manufacturing underwent many transformations. The primary process evolutions were total quality management (TQM), theory of constraints (TOC), Lean and the Toyota production system (TPS), and Six Sigma, ft will change even further as companies implement the new processes for digital manufacturing (covered in Chapter 6).

Another trend is a focus on processes in driving improvements. Awareness of the importance of processes is not new. Reengineering, Total Quality Management (TQM), and Six Sigma are all mature process-oriented initiatives, yet there is often a tension between those wanting to focus on process and those who want to bring on local functional improvements or new technology into the company.
