The relatively harsh surface created by the singeing process can be made smoother through the heat and pressure of a calendering process. The heated bowl in this operation is normally of chrome-plated steel composition, whereas the second bowl, which applies the pressure, usually comprises a somewhat softer material so as not to crush the fabric when the pressure... [Pg.237]

A rack and frame press uses heavy nylon cloth positioned in a wooden frame inside a rack. A measured amount of apple or other fmit mash is added from a hopper above the frame. The mash is leveled with a hand trowel and the edges of the nylon cloth are folded over the mash to encase it and create a cheese. The frame is removed, and a second rack is placed on top of the first cheese the process is repeated until a stack of cheeses is prepared. A hydrauhc ram then appHes gradually increa sing pressure on the stack and expresses the juice. A high yield of juice (80%) is obtained and no press aid is required. Because this process is labor intensive (17), it is mostly used for small farm and pilot-plant operations. [Pg.572]

The actual compression process is a cycle of die fill, compaction by intervention of the upper punch using great pressure on the granulation material in the die, and upward movement of both punches to achieve ejection of the tablet from the die. Singe-punch presses have only one die-and-punch arrangement and the compression is quick, with Httle dwell time of the top punch in die. [Pg.229]

Dimensional Stability. Plastics, ia general, are subject to dimensional change at elevated temperature. One important change is the expansion of plastics with increa sing temperature, a process that is also reversible. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion (GTE), measured according to ASTM E831, frequendy is not linear with temperature and may vary depending on the direction in which the sample is tested, that is, samples may not be isotropic (Eig. 7). [Pg.448]

Flotation. Flotation (qv) is used alone or in combination with washing and cleaning to deink office paper and mixtures of old newsprint and old magazines (26). An effective flotation process must fulfill four functions. (/) The process must efficiently entrain air. Air bubble diameter is about 1000 p.m. Typically air bubbles occupy 25—60% of the flotation cell volume. Increa sing the airRquid ratio in the flotation cell is said to improve ink removal efficiency (27). (2) Ink must attach to air bubbles. This is primarily a function of surfactant chemistry. Air bubbles must have sufficient residence time in the cell for ink attachment to occur. (3) There must be minimal trapping of cellulose fibers in the froth layer. This depends on both cell design and surfactant chemistry. (4) The froth layer must be separated from the pulp slurry before too many air bubbles coUapse and return ink particles to the pulp slurry. [Pg.8]

The use of porous formers ia the dippiag process, or porous molds prepared from plaster of Paris or uaglazed porcelaia with a surface pore size smaller than the majority of mbber particles, has been widely adopted ia the latex iadustry. With the porous porcelaia formers, the mbber particles are filtered oa the surface of the formers. The mbber latex coagulates because of its high coaceatratioa to form a film of increa sing thickness as more water is absorbed iato the ceramic. Its rate of iacrease diminishes sharply beyoad an optimum period of time, however, depending on the various characteristics of the ceramic. [Pg.258]
