The 3D representation of the test object can be rotated by means of an ARCBALL interface. Clicking on the main client area will produce a circle which is actually the silhouette of a sphere. Dragging the mouse rotates the sphere, and the model moves aceordingly. An arc on the surface of the sphere is drawn for visual feedback of orientation additionally a set of coordinate axes in the bottom left comer provides further feedback. [Pg.767]

The ant Iridomyrmex pruinosus utilizes 2-heptanone as an alarm pheromone. Figure 17 illustrates the existence of a close correlation of the similarity between 2-heptanone and its analogs in molecular model silhouettes with their alarm activity45. It is noteworthy that the replacement of the methylene group in position 3 of 2-heptanone by the ether linkage yields n-butyl acetate which has the same activity as the natural pheromone. Considerable activity is still retained even when the carbonyl group is replaced by the hydroxyl group. [Pg.107]

Ms. Hunnicutt turned back to her friends to talk. Reka Simonsen, thirty-two, who was sitting next to her in a sleeveless dress with an ink silhouette on her arm, replied, when asked, Yes, it s a real tattoo, and yes, it s really Nancy Drew. ... [Pg.27]

The beginning of the industrial age saw a substantial increase in demand for basic materials and chemicals, and the chemical industry was established to satisfy these demands for high production volumes. The tall and impressive silhouettes of modern chemical plants dominate industrial estates, visible from afar as symbols for the vast capabilities and capacities of today s chemical industry. Without this industry and its equipment of enormous proportions, our economic wealth would be quite inconceivable. [Pg.679]

Parallel or symmetrical extinction. Can be isotropic if viewed down the c axis, but then a six-sided silhouette should be observed. [Pg.136]

The stillness in the dock again brought the picture of fighters emerging in vague silhouette from the thin rain. "I was a very worried man," Von Schnitzler had said, "particularly after the... [Pg.326]

For example, studies of the morphology of a number of flame-generated aggregates (different carbonaceous soots, A1203 aerosols, etc.) [203] by both TEM and ALS procedures resulted in D2 = 1.7 0.15, while analysis of silhouettes of computer models of seven proteins [211] gave a value of D2 = 1.120 0.025, etc. [Pg.317]

HTPC (Hybrid ThermoPlastic Composite) bumper beams made by Plastic Omnium are used by General Motors on the Pontiac Montana, Chevrolet Venture and Oldsmobile Silhouette. Continuous woven fibres are overmoulded with a long or short fibre reinforced polypropylene to save weight (6 kg), enhance impact resistance (20-40%) and integrate numerous functions such as reinforcement ribs. The process is fully automated. [Pg.849]

The length of the breaking carbon-carbon bond corresponding to the leftmost column of orbitals is 2.092A, yet orbital /i which, together with its symmetry-related counterpart, /6, is responsible for this bond, still has the shape of a hybrid with significant s content. Orbitals /2 and /3 have the familiar silhouettes of distorted, almost n SC... [Pg.339]

Portland cement is the least expensive, most widely used synthetic inorganic polymer. It is employed as the basic nonmetallic, nonwoody material of construction. Concrete highways and streets span our countryside and concrete skyscrapers silhouette the urban skyline. Less spectacular uses are found in everyday life as sidewalks, fence posts, and parking bumpers. [Pg.383]

A large stockpile of coal is burning. Every part of its surface is in flames. In a 24-hr period the linear size of the pile, as measured by its silhouette against the horizon, seems to decrease by about 5%. [Pg.588]

A 50-year-old woman is seen in the emergency department complaining of a severe headache, shortness of breath, and ankle edema. Her vision is blurry and her blood pressure is 200/140 mm Hg. A blood test reveals azotemia and proteinuria. A chest radiograph reveals an enlarged cardiac silhouette. Is this a hypertensive emergency, and if so what pharmacological treatment might be considered ... [Pg.238]
