Silane coupling agents may contribute hydrophilic properties to the interface, especially when amino functional silanes, such as epoxies and urethane silanes, are used as primers for reactive polymers. The primer may supply much more amine functionality than can possibly react with the resin at the interphase. Those amines that could not react are hydrophilic and, therefore, responsible for the poor water resistance of bonds. An effective way to use hydrophilic silanes is to blend them with hydrophobic silanes such as phenyltrimethoxysilane. Mixed siloxane primers also have an improved thermal stability, which is typical for aromatic silicones [42]. [Pg.796]

The presence of surface OH groups or H2 O molecules can play a primary role in adsorption. For example, a microcalorimetric study of the adsorption of stearic acid, from heptane solution, on ferric oxide (Husbands et al., 1971) revealed that preadsorbed water enhanced adsorption of stearic acid. When adsorption takes place from a dry organic liquid, residual surface water may act as special agent. This was shown for the adsorption of a silane coupling agent (y-amino-propyl-triethoxysilane) on silica covered with water molecules for 6 < 1 (Trens and Denoyel, 1996). By the simultaneous determination of adsorption isotherms and the enthalpies of displacement (of heptane by various silanes) it was demonstrated that the amine function was able to displace some of the surface water and make it available for the hydrolysis of the silane into trisilanol, whereas the residual water was able to promote the formation of siloxane bonds between the trisilanol molecules and the surface. [Pg.159]

Silane coupling agents are widely used to improve the performance of mineral fillers in elastomer systems. The silanes most commonly used are the various sulfur-based ones and the vinyl and amino functional. The sulfides are generally used both pre-coated and in situ . The fillers most often used in conjunction with silane coupling agents are precipitated silicas and clays. The primary objective of the treatment is to improve polymer to filler bonding, although other benefits such as lower viscosity, better dispersion and reduced water adsorption are also observed. [Pg.190]

Another type of sealant uses a combination of chemistry to yield a product useful as a sealant. This chemistry is a marriage of silicone and organic chemistry known as a polyether silicone. The basic polymer for this type of sealant is the reaction product of a polyether diol with a diisocyanate followed by further reaction with an amino-functional alkoxy silane. Thus, the central portion of this polymer is a polyether that is terminated with a urethane linkage that leads to the terminal group which is an alkoxy silane. This polymer can cure by the methods described above for a standard silicone but it contains the properties of a polyether. As with the normal silicones described above, these materials also have to be reinforced in order to obtain the tensile properties desired for a sealant. The same list of fillers as described above can be used in polyether silicones. Adhesion promoters such as silane coupling agents, diluents of various sorts, plasticizers, and catalysts are also added to these materials. [Pg.319]
