At this point (1943) we were visited by representatives of the Signal Corps. They had learned through our reports that we had a new chemical that might be used for the field generation of hydrogen. They felt that their present method, based on the reaction of alkali with ferrosilicon, was cumbersome and they were seeking a more convenient hydrogen source. 

Fortunately, the Signal Corps was persuaded to support research to find improved methods of preparing sodium borohydride and catalysts to facilitate its solvolysis. We soon discovered that sodium borohydride could readily be prepared by treating sodium hydride with methyl borate at 250° C. 

Much work in pure linguistics, for instance, has been funded by the U.S. Navy Signal Corps.

The power supply is an Electro Products model D-612T. For automatic interrupted operation, it is connected to the electrolysis cell through a mercury relay operated by a Flexopulse timer (Eagle Signal Corp.). Voltages are read at the power supply and corrected for IR drop in the leads to th6 cell. 

Karl Kordesch left Vienna in 1953, ostensibly on a vacation with his family and his two small children. After a somewhat surreptitious passage through the Soviet-controlled part of Lower Austria, he and his family eventually turned up in New Jersey with the US Signal Corps under the auspices of Project Paper Clip. Two years later he joined Union Carbide s research laboratory in Parma, Ohio, as a staff scientist working on batteries. At Union Carbide he eventually became a Corporate Research Fellow this meant, he recalled, complete freedom, including worldwide travel, and getting more money without the need to become a manager. Kordesch produced many patents and published lots of scientific papers. 

At the Teheran airport there was no one to meet me, and the telephone operator, a soldier of the Iranian Army signal corps, spoke only Persian. I rode downtown in a taxi and a bad humor. The latter was not improved when I reached the hotel to find that I had a large dark room, with the toilet on the floor below and the bathroom on the floor above. Also I recalled that I had been specifically warned by George Polk not to use water from Teheran taps, not to drink it or brush my Teeth with it or even let it get into my eyes. I began to be unhappy.
