Shuffling gait

Parkinson s disease Tremor, stooped posture, shuffling gait, expressionless face, stiffness... 

The high potency antipsychotic haloperidol (Haldol) provides the same calming effects with minimal anticholinergic effects. Although haloperidol is very effective, dementia patients are quite sensitive to its extrapyramidal effects. These include stiffness, shuffling gait, a mask-like facial appearance, and involuntary movements. To minimize these effects, haloperidol is used in very low doses (0.5-1.0mg) when treating those with dementia. 

Live to acetylcholine activity. When this happens, the classic symptoms of Parkinson s disease emerge inclnding a tremor, stiffness and rigidity, a stooped posture, a masklike expressionless face, and a slow shuffling gait. 

Relief of symptoms, such as an improvement of masklike facial expression, muscular rigidity, shuffling gait, and resting tremors of the hands and head... 

Extrapyramidal symptoms appear to be dose-related (particularly high doses) and are divided into 3 categories akathisia (inability to sit still, tappingof feet), parkinsonian symptoms (such as mask-like face, tremors, shuffling gait, and hypersalivation), and acute dystonias (such as torticollis, opisthotonos, and oculogyric crisis). Dystonic reactions may also produce diaphoresis and pallor. 

Pseudoparkin- sonism Bradykinesia, rigidity, sialorrhea, mask-like facies, resting tremor, pill rolling, shuffling gait -1 week... 

There appeared to be considerable variability in the response to the TOCP, with some victims suffering paralysis and even death after only one drink of the contaminated jake. Most of the victims suffered paralysis for a long time, some permanently, and required crutches or sticks to walk, which they did with a shuffling gait, in some cases dragging their feet ( foot drop ). This became popularly known as Jake leg , and the way victims walked became known as the jake walk . 

Parkinson-like effects rigidity, shuffling gait, tremor, flat affect, lethargy... 

In Parkinson s disease, dopamine levels are decreased because of a deficiency in conversion of dopa to dopamine (see Figure 7-12). The common characteristics are tremors, difficulty initiating voluntary movement, a masked face with staring expression, and a shuffling gait. 

Main symptoms involve the nervous system. The initial symptoms are characterized by muscle weakness in the arms and legs that may occur days or weeks after exposure. Eventually, symptoms include symptoms of spinal cord injury, including a clumsy shuffling gait, spasticity, hyperreflexia, and permanent damage to the pyramidal tracts and upper motor neuron syndrome. This syndrome is known as OPIDN. 

Assess for clinical improvement of parkinsonism tremor of head/hands at rest, masklike facial expression, shuffling gait, muscular rigidity.
