Short oil alkyds

Silicone resins with high phenyl contents may be used with medium or short oil alkyds as blends in air-dried or baked coatings to improve heat or weather resistance the alkyd component contributes to adhesion and flexibiUty. AppHcations include insulation varnishes, heat-resistant paints, and marine coatings. [Pg.42]

Trimethylolpropane (TMP), the reduced crossed aldol condensation product of //-butyraldehyde and formaldehyde, competes in many of the same markets as glycerol (qv) and pentaerythritol. The largest market for TMP is as a precursor in unsaturated polyester resins, short-oil alkyds, and urethanes for surface coatings (see Alkyd resins). [Pg.379]

With these lacquers, nitrocellulose-based primer-surfacers are used. As well as liquid plasticisers, a wide range of materials are used as plasticising resins short oil alkyds, maleinised oils, ester gum, rosin and bodied castor oils. Pigmentation is usually inert. Thermoplastic acrylics are often preferred under acrylic lacquers these are based on acrylic resins and cellulose acetate butyrate. [Pg.628]

Conditions to be met in oven drying enamels depend also on the composition of the binder. Paint systems containing melamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resins, for instance, harden by polycondensation with other resins, such as epoxy resins, short-oil alkyd or acrylic resins at elevated temperatures. Baking is carried out at temperatures between 100 and almost 200°C and may last from a few minutes to more than an horn. A general trend towards energy conservation has shifted public attention towards binders which require low baking temperatures. [Pg.154]

Nondrying, short oil alkyds are generally based on castor or coconut oils. They are used with nitrocellulose for exterior lacquers. Coconut oil alkyds give the best exterior durability castor oil lacquers have the best film properties. [Pg.222]

A notable feature of the model is the postulation of an expression relating aggregation of polymer chains to concentration and the solvent power of the diluent. The excellent agreement between prediction and observation for solutions of short oil alkyd resins is taken as evidence for the importance of aggregation effects on viscosity in these systems. In addition, the accurate description of the molecular weight dependence of the viscosities of concentrated polystyrene solutions is an indication of the general applicability of the model. [Pg.54]

Short-oil alkyds are used typically for OEM and do not dry well unless force-air dried or baked. These resins contain <45% oil and >35% phthalic anhydride. They are soluble in aromatics but not in mineral spirits, and are significandy harder than medium- or long-oil alkyds. [Pg.582]

Short oil alkyd resins require special solvent mixtures for each area of use. Principal solvents include aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g., xylene), solvent naphtha fractions, and glycol ethers. Lower alcohols, even in small amounts, have a powerful viscositylowering effect. The choice of solvent depends on the solvent power for the resins and the application method. The last solvent to evaporate during drying must be a true solvent for the binders because otherwise the paint film becomes opaque or inhomogeneous. [Pg.47]

Short oil alkyd resins can also be combined with nitrocellulose. They are readily soluble in typical nitrocellulose solvents (esters and ketones). Special short oil alkyd resins that are soluble in lower alcohols are often processed into furniture lacquers and acid-curing paints, and are also used in paper (spray) coatings and in flexoprint-... [Pg.48]
