Shelf design

The type of shelf design is the next consideration. The shelf can be a solid plate of plastic material, an inverted pan-like structure with reinforcing ribs, a sandwich-type structure with two skins and an expanded core, or even a lattice type sheet that has a series of openings. The choice between these is dictated by a number of factors. One is appearance or aesthetics. 

Outdoor locations require a more rigorous protection and IP54 would be the minimum for the larger machines. Eor off-the-shelf designs again 1P55 or IP56 would be acceptable. 

Most instruments and control devices are of a standardized off-the-shelf design, which complies with one or more national standards. In certain cases, for instance flow measurement orifice plates or control valves, application calculations are necessary, but these are in general in a standardized format. Loop diagrams also tend to follow various standard formats, according to application. In summary, most of this work can be handled in a systematic way, leaning heavily on databanks of item design data and application software.

The process provides fast mol ding cycles, unHmited shelf life for the sheet, large part capabQity, and design flexibOity. The process also allows for scrap materials to be recycled. Trim waste from the mol ding operation and defective parts can be ground up and recycled into the basic sheet process in controUed amounts. Some of this waste has also been used as input for injection mol ding. 

CSPE. Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), a synthetic mbber manufactured by DuPont, is marketed under the name Hypalon. It can be produced as a self-curing elastomer designed to cure on the roof. The membrane is typically reinforced with polyester and is available in finished thicknesses of 0.75 to 1.5 mm. Because CSPE exhibits thermoplastic characteristics before it cures, it offers heat-weldable seams. After exposure on the roof, the membrane cures offering the toughness and mechanical set of a thermoset. The normal shelf life of the membrane for maintaining this thermoplastic characteristic is approximately six months. After the membrane is fully cured in the field, conventional adhesives are needed to make repairs. 

Final screen selection is such that the length and width dimensions match off-the-shelf machines in order to keep costs down. Operating the installed screen at a feed rate greater or less than the design rate results in a less efficient screening operation, because bed depth varies with feed rate. 

In rotary devices, reradiation from the exposed shelf surface to the solids bed is a major design consideration. A treatise on furnaces, including radiative heat-transfer effects, is given by Ellwood and Danatos [Chem. Eng., 73(8), 174 (1966)]. Design Methods for Vactium-Shelf Dryers Heat is transferred to the wet material by conduction through the shelf and bottom of the tray and by radiation from the shelf above. The critical moisture content will not be necessarily the same as for atmospheric tray drying [Ernst, Ridgway, and Tiller, Jnd. Eng. Chem., 30, 1122 (1938)]. 

Many preengineered conveyor components can be purchased off the shelf they are economical and easy to assemble, and they perform well on conventional applications (for which they are designed). However, it is advisable to check with the manufac turer to be sure that the apphcation is proper.

The decision to develop in-house or buy a tool or technique may arise as awareness of the opportunities in a business increases. Off-the-shelf products are more popular as the development of tools and techniques is very time consuming and labour intensive. A generally expressed desire is to use computerized techniques for easier documentation and design reuse. However, it should be noted that a paper-based...

Some major transformer manufacturers build standard off-the-shelf components used in the design of common-mode filter transformers such as Coilcraft (Cary, IL). These transformers have various inductance values, and current ratings and also provide the needed creepage dimensions. This can make the designer s job a lot easier. 

All types of compressors will benefit if suction drums are part of the inlet system design. However, as a practical consideration, it would be difficult to justify a drum on small spared compressors, particularly the off-the-shelf type. If the compressor is in critical service, even when spared and/or replacement cost is deemed significant, suction drums should be considered. 

Rail cars for chemicals have been designed with shelf couplers or double shelf couplers and reinforced tank ends to reduce releases from accidents. 

The guideline on impurities in new medicinal products parallels the drug substance text, but the designated thresholds concern only degradation products. The thresholds should be applied to the product at the end of its shelf-life, as that is when the greatest level of degradation is expected to have occurred.
