Sharps waste disposal

An injection room of 6 x 6 feet should be equipped with a comfortable chair with armrest for the patient to sit on and a sink. All appropriate supplies should be stored in the room. A lead-shielded sharps container for syringe disposal and lead-shielded storage bin for other waste disposal are kept in the room. 

Any chemical wastes are placed irr appropriate and properly identified containers for disposal through a chemical waste disposal program. Broken glass is disposed of in heavy cardboard or kraftboard boxes labeled broken glass. Any sharps, as defined under the blood-bome pathogen standard, will be placed irr a legal corrtainer for disposal as infectious waste. Only ordinary solid, nonhazardous waste may be placed irr ordinary trash containers. 

Employers should take appropriate preventative measures against occupational exposure. These include engineering controls and work practice controls. Examples of engineering controls include biohazard hoods, puncture-resistant sharps containers, mechanical pipette devices, and other devices that permanently remove the hazard or isolate individuals from exposure. Organizations must evaluate and incorporate new safer devices including needleless devices, needles with sheaths, and blunt suture needles. Work practice controls must include hand washing policies, sharps handling procedures, proper waste disposal techniques, and other actions that would reduce the likelihood of exposure.

In addition to being harmful to the individual, many chemicals are hazardous to the environment, so waste chemicals must not be put down the sink or into the rubbish bins unless this is stated to be safe. Waste solvent and reagents must be put into appropriate waste bottles. Chlorinated and nonchlorinated solvents are usually kept separately and then sent for disposal by external contractors. Broken glass or needles and scalpels are to be disposed of in sharps containers. 

At the end of an experiment, all waste (chemical, radioactive, microbiological and sharps) should be disposed of in an approved manner. 

Do not put broken glass, pipette tips or needles in the normal waste - use the SHARPS disposal bins provided.

Radioactive needles contaminated with infectious agents or blood should be autoclaved as described above, and then incinerated on site or shipped to a low-level radioactive waste site. To prevent injuries, it is important that hypodermic needles and other sharps be kept in waste containers that are puncture-resistant, leak-proof, and closable from the point of discard through ultimate disposal. To prevent airborne radioactive materials, destruction of needles by grinding or a similar means is not recommended.
