Auto uses are said to account for about one-third of the 30000 tonnes of silicone rubber consumed annually around the world (in turn about 10% of total silicone consumption). Specific uses include shaft sealing rings, spark plug caps, O-rings (the major market for the fluorosilicones), gaskets, coolant and heater hoses for buses and trucks, and ignition cables. [Pg.839]

In order to dissipate the compression heat, which is a fundamental problem for all dry compressing vacuum pumps, a cooled water jacket is provided. This dry compressing chemistry vacuum pump attains through its three stages pressures down to under 1 mbar. The shaft seals for the oil-covered gear chamber consist of shaft sealing rings made of a material which is chemically resistant as far as possible. [Pg.119]

Dow Corning, General Electric, and Shinetsu Chemical Company are the principal suppHers of these elastomers in the United States. It is estimated that the volume used in the United States is between 2700 and 3600 t/yr. The primary uses of these elastomers are in O-rings and shaft seals, as weU as wire and cable, and electrical coimectors. [Pg.234]

Main Seal Body The term seal body makes reference to all rotating pai ts on a pusher seal, excluding shaft packing and seal ring. In many cases it is the chief reason to avoid a particular design for a particular seiwice. [Pg.941]

Shaft-sealing elements can be split up into two groups. The first type may be called pusher-type seals and includes the 0-ring, V-ring, U-cup, and wedge configurations. Figure 10-116 shows some typic pusher-type seals. The second type is the bellow-type seals, which differ from the pusher-type seals in that they form a static seal between themselves and the shaft. [Pg.941]

Designs differ eonsiderably from one manufaeturer to another. The term seal body makes referenee to all rotating parts on a pusher seal, exeluding shaft paeking and the seal ring. The eonfiguration or options offered on the seal body may be the ehief reason to avoid the design for that partieular serviee. [Pg.511]

Mechanical seals offer a more reliable seal than compressed packing seals. Because the spring in a mechanical seal exerts a constant pressure on the seal ring, it automatically adjusts for wear at the faces. Thus, the need for manual adjustment is eliminated. Additionally, because the bearing surface is between the rotating and stationary components of the seal, the shaft or shaft sleeve does not become worn. Although the seal will eventually wear out and need replacing, the shaft will not experience wear. [Pg.946]

A rotating seal ring (primary ring), mounted so that it can slide along the shaft to take up wear in the seal faces. [Pg.215]
