The turboexpander dry gas seal consists of the conventional dry gas seal mating ring and primary ring, an outboard labyrinth, an inboard labyrinth, and tlie cavity to be vented, if desired. The most generally useful topological criteria for the effective disconnection of a network of fused rings fall into several categories. In the examples which follow most rings are arbitrarily chosen as 5- or 6-membered, and the term ring refers to a primary ring. 

A strategic bond must be an exendo bond within a primary (i.e. non-peripheral, or non-perimeter) ring of 4-7 members and exo to a primary ring larger than 3-membered. 

A disconnection is not strategic if it involves a bond common to two bridged primary rings and generates a new ring having more than 7 members. Thus the disconnections shown for 128 and 129 are allowed by rules 1 and 2, whereas those shown for 130 and 131 are not. 

Primary Ring. A ring within a structure which cannot be expressed as a periphery (or perimeter) of two smaller rings which are fused or bridged together. 

A rotating seal ring (primary ring), mounted so that it can slide along the shaft to take up wear in the seal faces. 

If n is the cyclic order, as we have already defined it (see Chapter 6), it is possible to demonstrate that the maximum number of rings is 2" - 1, and that there exist, as a minimum, n primary rings. 

It can be seen that the set of synthetically significant rings include the "primary rings" I, 2, 3, 4 and the "secondary rings" 5 and 6.

At this point, the student should be able to find the "strategic bonds", looking first for all the primary rings, the set of synthetically significant rings, the maximum bridging ring, etc., as explained in Chapter 7.
