In the case of sweet basil, Ocimwn basilicum, Charabot and Hubert have examined the essential oils distilled from plants which had been cultivated in full light and from those kept shaded from the light. Jn the former case the oil contained 57 3 per cent, of estragol and 42 7 per cent, of terpene compounds, whilst in the case of the shaded plants the estragol had risen tO 74 2per cent, and the terpene compounds fell to 25 8 per cent. [Pg.6]

In Umbrophytic (shade) plants the stomata are either wholly on the lower surface or partly so with a number on the upper surface. Where the plants are Mesophytic and exposed to dense sunlight and leaves remain dorsoventral, the stomata are on the lower surface these stomata are large, if the surroundings are damp. Method of Preparation Branches and other small diameter wood are chipped into 1-3 inch pieces, preferably in the spring when the sap content is highest. As stated before a mycorrhizal mycelium might connect several plants of the same species but also plants of different species Fig (6.9). It has been shown that this also happens in nature and that all kinds of nutrients can flow between the plants including carbon fixed by photosynthesis. If a plant is linked to other plants by a common mycorrhiza it has been experimentally shown that carbon can flow from a plant in the sun to a shaded plant. These experiments have only been done by radioactive pulse-labelling and it is still debated if this flow is of any significance to the plant systems.
