We can develop two very plausible and distinct hypotheses to integrate Hofmann s LSD story with sleep and dream research (on the one hand) and with schizophrenia research (on the other). Serotonin modulation provides the link to dreaming and dopamine modulation provides the link to schizophrenia.

Melatonin regulates circadian rhythms, most noticeably, sleep. Tryptamine is closely related to melatonin and the amino acid tryptophan.
