As discussed in Chapter III, the progression in adsoiptivities along a homologous series can be understood in terms of a constant increment of work of adsorption with each additional CH2 group. This is seen in self-assembling monolayers discussed in Section XI-IB. The film pressure r may be calculated from the adsorption isotherm by means of Eq. XI-7 as modified for adsorption from dilute solution ... [Pg.394]

The tenn slow in this case means that the exchange rate is much smaller than the frequency differences in the spectrum, so the lines in the spectrum are not significantly broadened. Flowever, the exchange rate is still comparable with the spin-lattice relaxation times in the system. Exchange, which has many mathematical similarities to dipolar relaxation, can be observed in a NOESY-type experiment (sometimes called EXSY). The rates are measured from a series of EXSY spectra, or by perfonning modified spin-lattice relaxation experiments, such as those pioneered by Floflfman and Eorsen [20]. [Pg.2107]

In some cases the atomic charges are chosen to reproduce thermodynamic properties calculated using a molecular dynamics or Monte Carlo simulation. A series of simulations is performed and the charge model is modified until satisfactory agreement with experiment is obtained. This approach can be quite powerful despite its apparent simplicity, but it is only really practical for small molecules or simple models. [Pg.207]

In the case of ethylene, because of 2-fold symmetry, odd terms drop out of the series, V3, V5,... = 0. In the case of ethane, because of 3-fold symmeti-y, even temis drop out, V2, V4,... = 0. Terms higher than three, even though permitted by symmetry, are usually quite small and force fields can often be limited to three torsional terms. Like cubic and quaitic terms modifying the basic quadratic approximation for stretching and bending, terms in the Fourier expansion of Ftors (to) beyond n = 3 have limited use in special cases, for example, in problems involving octahedrally bound complexes. In most cases we are left with the simple expression... [Pg.121]

In addition to inorganic radicals, which profoundly modify the properties of a paraflSn hydrocarbon residue, there is a whole series of organic groupings which are distinguished by exceptional reactivity, for example, the ethylene and acetylene groupings, and the phenyl and naphthyl radicals. Thus the characterisation of unsaturated hydrocarbons and their derivatives, e.g., the aromatic compounds, becomes possible. [Pg.1026]

The generally accepted mechanism for this reaction is presented as a series of three equa tions m Figure 4 6 We say generally accepted because a reaction mechanism can never be proved to be correct A mechanism is our best present assessment of how a reaction proceeds and must account for all experimental observations If new experimental data appear that conflict with the mechanism the mechanism must be modified to accom modate them If the new data are consistent with the proposed mechanism our confl dence grows that the mechanism is likely to be correct... [Pg.153]

However, unlike electrical anharmonicity, mechanical anharmonicity modifies the vibrational term values and wave functions. The harmonic oscillator term values of Equation (6.3) are modified to a power series in (u + ) ... [Pg.143]

Numerous studies have probed how novolac microstmcture influences resist hthographic properties. In one example, a series of resists were formulated from novolacs prepared with varying feed ratios ofpara-jmeta-cmso. These researchers found that the dissolution rate decreased, and the resist contrast increased, as thepara-jmeta-cmso feed ratio increased (33). Condensation can only occur at the ortho position ofpara-cmso but can occur at both the ortho- and i ra-positions of meta-cmso. It is beheved that increased steric factors and chain rigidity that accompany increasedpara-cmso content modify the polymer solubihty. [Pg.122]

The emulsion process can be modified for the continuous production of latex. One such process (68) uses two stirred-tank reactors in series, followed by insulated hold-tanks. During continuous operation, 60% of the monomers are continuously charged to the first reactor with the remainder going into the second reactor. Surfactant is added only to the first reactor. The residence time is 2.5 h for the first reactor where the temperature is maintained at 65°C for 92% conversion. The second reactor is held at 68°C for a residence time of 2 h and conversion of 95%. [Pg.194]

Each member of the N-Lite Series (National Starch) is aimed at a specific role ia fat replacemeat, ie, N-Lite L for soups and sandwich spreads N-Lite LP for use ia dressiags and dips. N-Lite LP is an iastant modified food starch which yields a very oily texture and is stable to heat, acid, and shear N-Oil is a tapioca dextria suggested for fat-like mouthfeel and the N-Elate and N-Oil Series are propriety mixtures of starches and other fat replacers. [Pg.119]

The basic form of the equation is normally modified so that the differential is expressed in pressure units and the flow coefficient is divided into the product of an experimentally deterrnined discharge coefficient, iC, and a series of calculated coefficients. Astemi2ole (10) has further been modified into a series of 4-phenylcyclohexylamine compounds, resulting in the synthesis of cabastine, for example. Cabastine is a highly active compound and its geometric isomers are also active, demonstrating the stereoselectivity of histamine receptors toward chiral ligands. The > S, 4 R-levo antipode of cabastine was the most active, and therefore this isomer, levocabastine (13), has been chosen for further development. Because of high potency, levocabastine has been developed for topical appHcation such as eye drops and nasal spray. [Pg.139]

Human Extended Insulin Zinc Suspension. Ultralente Humulin U is a long-acting form of human insulin produced by recombinant DNA techniques. It is adrninistered subcutaneously and should not be given intravenously. The time course of this preparation is similar for onset of activity but shorter for maximum activity and duration of action compared with ultralente preparations of animal origin. Insulins of the lente series can be mixed in any proportion to obtain the desired dose and modified activity. [Pg.340]

For example, Day-Glo HM Series toners come ia a range of colors suitable for flexographic and gravure inks of the solvent-base type. The Radiant GF Series and Lawter HVT Series are also suitable for this type of apphcation (see Table 2). Generally, these toners are of the formaldehyde—sulfonamide type and requite oxygenated solvents, primarily alcohol—ester blends, for proper solution. For appHcations such as flexographic printing on film, these materials are modified with other resias such as nitrocellulose or polyamides ia the finished ink. [Pg.302]

Flexographic Inks. Fluorescent toners such as the Radiant GF, Lawter HVT, and Day-Glo HM and HMS Series toners are used in flexographic ink formulations. These products are soluble in blends of alcohol (80%) and ester solvents (20%) and are compatible with modifying materials such as nitroceUulose resins and acryHc solution polymers. Flexographic inks of this type are used most commonly to print products such as ceUophane and polyethylene film for packaging, and also to print paper products such as gift wrap and price labels. [Pg.303]

Daylight fluorescent pigments (qv) are considered to be nontoxic. Since they are combinations of polymers and dyestuffs, the combined effect of the ingredients must be taken into account when considering the net toxic effect of these materials. Table 5 gives results of laboratory animal toxicity tests of standard modified melamine—formaldehyde-type pigments, the Day-Glo A Series, and the products recommended for plastic mol ding, Day-Glo Z-series. [Pg.304]
