During a screening campaign some plates and even entire batches can fail due to various reasons. To control the quality of plates, during a screen, we use the Z-primes and the Multivariate Z-primes nodes we have developed. Plates failing to fulfill a minimal criterion such as a Z-prime factor above 0.3 are eliminated from further analysis and scheduled for rescreening. Models in general are a mathematical representation of a conceptual picture. Rate equations and mass balances for the oxidants and their reactants are the basic tools for the mathematical description. As Levenspiel (1972, p.359) pointed out the requirement for a good engineering model is that it be the closest representation of reality which can be treated without too many mathematical complexities. It is of little use to select a model which closely mirrors reality but is so complicated that we cannot do anything with it. In cases where the complete theoretical description of the system is not desirable or achievable, experiments are used to calculate coefficients to adjust the theory to the observations this procedure is called semi-empirical modeling.

The hard sphere diameters were then used to calculate the theoretical Enskog coefficients at each density and temperature. The results are shown in Figure 3 as plots of the ratio of the experimental to calculated coefficients vs. the packing fraction, along with the molecular dynamics results (24) for comparison. The agreement between the calculated ratios and the molecular dynamics results is excellent at the intermediate densities, especially for those ratios calculated with diameters determined from PVT data. Discrepancies at the intermediate densities can be easily accounted for by errors in measured diffusion coefficients and calculated diameters. The corrected Enskog theory of hard spheres gives an accurate description of the self-diffusion in dense supercritical ethylene.
