Separation synthesis

Different MSAs may lead to completely different separation systems designs. The systematic generation procedure given in the separations synthesis algorithm is demonstrated for two potential solvents, hexane and methylene chloride. [Pg.455]

The separation synthesis problems are of highly combinatorial nature when the number of components and separation methods is large. In this simple five component and three separation methods case there are 1134 different solutions (Hurme, 1996). Two of them are shown in Figure 13 as an example. [Pg.112]

In general, the various synthesis strategies for nanocarbon hybrids can be categorized as ex situ and in situ techniques [3]. The ex situ ( building block ) approach involves the separate synthesis of the two components prior to their hybridization. One can rely on a plethora of scientific work to ensure good control of the component s dimensions (i.e. size, number of layers), morphology (i.e. spherical nanoparticles, nanowires) and functionalization. The components are then hybridized through covalent, noncovalent or electrostatic interactions. In contrast, the in situ approach is a one-step process that involves the synthesis of one of the components in the pres-... [Pg.126]

This chapter presents two applications of MINLP methods in the area of separations. Section 9.1 provides an overall introduction to the synthesis of separation systems. Section 9.2 focuses on sharp heat-integrated distillation sequencing. Section 9.3 presents an application of nonsharp separation synthesis. [Pg.379]

During the last three decades a lot of attention has been on the separation of a single multicomponent feed stream into pure substances using sharp separations. Relative to this effort, there has been less work for nonsharp separation synthesis, as well as the separation of several multicomponent feed streams into several multicomponent streams. [Pg.393]

In cases of the types shown in Fig. 9.5, where the transient rises to a relatively high maximum (ca. 22% of total), good quality data across the time course for any two of the three species might permit distinction. Even better, a timely application of an appropriate quench might permit isolation of the transient species for separate characterisation and kinetic examination. Subjection of the putative intermediate, after isolation or separate synthesis, to the same reaction conditions must yield the anticipated products, and at a rate not lower than that of the interrupted reaction. [Pg.237]

The reaction and separation synthesis approach of Section 5 has been adopted to the problem of activated sludge process design (83). The conventional designs as well as all novel schemes for combined oxidation/denitrification of wastewater are explored. The process is optimized using a novel methodology for optimal reaction/separation network synthesis, supplied with a comprehensive kinetic model (84). The activated sludge process is synthesized using the systematic... [Pg.449]
