Supports used for obtaining Ziegler-Natta catalysts can differ essentially from one another. Some of the supports may contain reactive surface groups (such as hydroxyl groups present in specially prepared metal oxides) while others do not contain such reactive functional groups (such as pure anhydrous metal chlorides). Therefore, the term supported catalyst is used in a very wide sense. Supported catalysts comprise not only systems in which the transition metal compound is linked to the support by means of a chemical covalent bond but also systems in which the transition metal atom may occupy a position in a lattice structure, or where complexation, absorption or even occlusion may take place [28]. The transition metal may also be anchored to the support via a Lewis base in such a case the metal complexes the base, which is coordinatively fixed on the support surface [53,54]. [Pg.61]

Electroinactive species — Ions and neutral compounds that show no signal in electrochemical measurements. There are versions of the pneumatic controller that support the useful one-, two-, and three-mode combinations of proportional, integral, and derivative actions. Polymer-based, synthetic ion-exchangers known as resins are available commercially in gel type or truly porous forms. Gel-type resins are not porous in the usual sense of the word, since their structure depends upon swelhng in the solvent in which they are immersed. Enzymatic Reactors Adding free enzyme to a batch reactor is practical only when the value of the enzyme is relatively low. With expensive enzymes, reuse by retaining the enzyme with some type of support makes great economic sense. As some activity is usually lost in tethering the enzyme and the additional operations cost money, stabihty is very important. An appreciation of statistical results can be gained from a study conducted to support the first application of computer control for an ethylene oxide production unit at Union Carbide Corporation in 1958. For the above purpose, twenty years of production experience with many units was correlated by excellent statisticians who had no regard for kinetics or chemistry.
