Such point defects play an important role in the treatment of diffusion and electrical conductivities in solids and the solubility of a salt in the host lattice of another or different valence type [112]. Point defects have a thermodynamic basis for their existence in terms of the energy and entropy of their formation, the situation is similar to the formation of isolated holes and erratic atoms on a surface. Dislocations, on the other hand, may be viewed as an organized concentration of point defects they are lattice defects and play an important role in the mechanism of the plastic deformation of solids. Lattice defects or dislocations are not thermodynamic in the sense of the point defects their formation is intimately connected with the mechanism of nucleation and crystal growth (see Section IX-4), and they constitute an important source of surface imperfection. [Pg.275]

Potcntiomctric Biosensors Potentiometric electrodes for the analysis of molecules of biochemical importance can be constructed in a fashion similar to that used for gas-sensing electrodes. The most common class of potentiometric biosensors are the so-called enzyme electrodes, in which an enzyme is trapped or immobilized at the surface of an ion-selective electrode. Reaction of the analyte with the enzyme produces a product whose concentration is monitored by the ion-selective electrode. Potentiometric biosensors have also been designed around other biologically active species, including antibodies, bacterial particles, tissue, and hormone receptors. [Pg.484]

Potentiometric electrodes also can be designed to respond to molecules by incorporating a reaction producing an ion whose concentration can be determined using a traditional ion-selective electrode. If flavors are classed into odors and tastes as is common practice in science, it can be calculated that there are probably more than 10 possible sensations of odor and only a few, perhaps five, sensations of taste (13,21,35—37). Just as a hereditary or genetic factor may cause taste variations between individuals toward phenylthiourea, a similar factor may be in operation with odor. The odor of the steroid androsterone, found in many foods and human sweat, may eflcit different responses from different individuals. Some are very sensitive to it and find it unpleasant. To others, who are less sensitive to it, it has a musk or sandalwood-like smell. Approximately 50% of the adults tested cannot detect any odor even at extremely high concentrations. Doppler Flow Meters. Doppler flow meters sense the shift in apparent frequency of an ultrasonic beam as it is reflected from air bubbles or other acoustically reflective particles that ate moving in a Hquid flow. It is essential for operation that at least some particles ate present, but the concentration can be low and the particles as small as ca 40 p.m. CaUbration tends to be influenced by particle concentration because higher concentrations result in mote reflections taking place neat the wall, in the low velocity portion of the flow profile. Cross-country gas pipelines generally must odorize the normally odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas ia urban and suburban areas, as is required of gas distribution companies. Organosulfur compounds, such as mercaptans, are usually used for this purpose, and code requires that the odor must be strong enough for someone with a normal sense of smell to detect a gas leak iato air at one-fifth the lower explosive limit of gas—air mixtures. The latter is about 5%, so the odorant concentration should be about 1%, but most companies odorize more heavily than this as a safety precaution. [Pg.50]

Ammonia.. The most rehable results for ammonia are obtained from fresh samples. Storage of acidified samples at 4°C is the best way to minimi2e losses if prompt analysis is impossible. The odor threshold of carbon disulfide is about 1 ppm in air but varies widely depending on individual sensitivity and purity of the carbon disulfide.
