Self-steering

Tire traction describes the force transmission between tire and road under aU eventualities. These are cases of openly calculated self-deception, but it is evident that the same strategy is often used in surreptitious cases. It is a strategy that filters input of evidence and that is much easier to do than to form beliefs that run counter to evidence already in the mind. That is why open self-deception uses this strategy so often. Incidentally, it is also a strategy that shows up a further difference between self-deception and the deception of others steering someone else away from evidence for not-p is not quite positive enough to count as deceiving him that p.

One possible approach to the resolution of this dilemma might be termed the way of the shaman one dispenses with all attempts at reductionist analysis and simply accepts the experience on its own terms, perhaps as a divine revelation from a source outside the self—a god within a plant, for instance. Indeed, the psychedelic experience is so profound and overwhelming that even scientifically sophisticated individuals can easily succumb to the misperception that the trip is in the drug. The alternative response, which might be characterized as the way of the alchemist, is to become utterly obsessional in the seeking of reductive explanations, and to construct wildly elaborate models in an attempt to integrate the irreducible reality of what is experienced into some scientific or, more often, quasi-scientific paradigm. This book tries, unsuccessfully perhaps, to steer a middle course between these two approaches. 

Communism for Marx was the unity of self-realization and community -self-realization of the individual for the sake of the community. The exact institutional implementation of that ideal remains elusive, both as concerns the system of production and distribution and as concerns the apparatus for political decision-making. In 7.3.31 offer a tentative reconstruction of Marx s Utopia, but 1 can hardly stress too much the difficulty of steering a middle course between vagueness and implausibility. By contrast, it is easier to make sense of his writings about the paths to Utopia. Between capitalism and the final form of communism we find both a political transition stage ("the dictatorship of the proletariat") and an economic transition stage ("the first stage of communism"). Of these, the first transition occurs before the second, if we are to take literally...
