Self-assembled thiol

The use of tetraoctylammonium salt as phase transfer reagent has been introduced by Brust [199] for the preparation of gold colloids in the size domain of 1-3 nm. This one-step method consists of a two-phase reduction coupled with ion extraction and self-assembly using mono-layers of alkane thiols. The two-phase redox reaction controls the growth of the metallic nuclei via the simultaneous attachment of self-assembled thiol monolayers on the growing clusters. The overall reaction is summarized in Equation (5). [Pg.28]

The most common procedure for estimating X consists in measuring the thermodynamically significant electrosorption valency l and in evaluating its extrathermodynamic contributions k vkw and g of Eqs. (26) and (27) in order to extract the X value. A more direct extrathermodynamic procedure that relies exclusively on the Gouy-Chapman theory can be applied to the important class of self-assembled thiol monolayers anchored to a metal surface. [Pg.333]

It s remarkable that the cracking pattern of the monolayer (p2) is significantly different from the multilayer whereas the Pi peak exhibits a similar cracking pattern. This shows that at 510 K intact molecules of the SAM desorb but that the p2 peak originates from a decomposition product. The fact that no mass 199 can be seen but mass 34 (H2S) leads to the conclusion, that in this case the C-S bond is broken. This idea is supported by literature dealing with alkanethiols [12] and similar self-assembling thiols [13] on gold, as well as on other metals, for example on Cu [14,15],... [Pg.105]

Rickert et al. described a sensor for the detection of antibodies against the foot and mouth disease virus [123-125]. Synthetic peptides constituting an epitope of the virus were immobihsed using activated self-assembled thiols. The antibodies were detected in a flowing solution in real time. Regeneration of the surface was also performed. [Pg.268]

At frequencies < 102 Hz all Bode plots coincide hence, only the experimental points for the lower KCl concentration were reported. The modification and functionabzation of metal electrodes with self-assembled thiol adlayers [66, 67] opens up many possibilities for electrochemical applications. At present, this very active field is centered on the studies of the electrochemical properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) [68, 69]. In short, electrochemical deposition represents a promising technique for the preparation of Cu-NPs due to its ease of use, low cost, environmental friendliness and convenience of manufacture. In particular, the high sensitivity and low cost of the SPEs when using Cu-NPs should lead to their widespread use in a variety of scientific and medical fields, including medical diagnostics. [Pg.80]
