Self-assembled monolayers transformations

It is known, however, that isothiocyanates on their own can form stable self-assembled monolayers on gold (Section V.E), and amine-terminated monolayers were reported to show unusually low reactivity towards electrophilic reagents329,330. It is therefore possible that the observed immobilization of eosin is due not to reaction with amino groups, but to either insertion of the eosin isothiocyanate into a disordered layer of cysteamine, or even replacement of cysteamine monolayer with the molecules of S=C=N—eosin. Because the experimental data on reactions in gold-thiol monolayers are scarce, chemical transformations described in this section should be interpreted with some caution. 

Leufgen et al. [82] reported the investigation of a template-assembled synthetic protein (TASP) conformation and its orientation in self-assembled monolayers (SAM) by means of TOF-SIMS. In this study, both the presence and molecular orientation of the TASP molecule can be monitored by TOF-SIMS, and furthermore, the influence of self-assembly protocols on the TASP molecular surface orientation can be studied by TOF-SIMS, although Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fail in this case.

Nevertheless, the authors have reported so far a large range of applications on lipid and membrane systems of sizes comparable to those studied using MARTINI, including spontaneous vesicle self-assembly, monolayer collapse, vesicle to micelle transformation and membrane fusion. The SDK model thus represents a powerful and promising approach to investigate finely tuned chemical properties of large lipid assemblies when cheaper but less accurate CG models turn out to be unsuccessful.
