Paste Selection — Factors affecting paste are rheology and particle size and shape. For example, Type-4 solder paste is required for pitches under 0.4 mm, based on experimentation showing that four or more solder particles are needed to span the stencil aperture to achieve consistently good solder-paste deposition. Similarly, with 0.3- to 0.4-mm pitch, stencil openings should be between 0.005" and 0.008" wide. Because Type-4 paste has solder particles <0.0014", this criterion is met statistically. The selection of a suitable matrix for a composite material involves many factors, and is especially important because the matrix is usually the weak and flexible link in all properties of a two-phase composite material. The matrix selection factors include ability of the matrix to wet the fiber (which affects the fiber-matrix interface strength), ease of processing, resulting laminate quality, and the temperature limit to which the matrix can be subjected. Other performance-related factors include strain-to-failure, environmental resistance, density, and cost.

The principles and practice of corrosion inhibition have been described in terms of the factors affecting inhibitor performance and selection (principles) and the more important practical situations in which inhibitors are used (practice). It is that the plastic and the process selected profoundly affect the quality and appearance of the product. For this reason, it is usually unwise to create a design first, and then decide on material and process at least consider all three factors from the start. This seems obvious and logical, but it is frequently ignored in practice, especially when converting a metal design to a plastic material.
