There is a rich and expanding universe of available software and hardware tools to implement a research IT environment such as the one described here. If there is any critical take-away message, it would be to be willing to adopt and leverage the excellent existing capabilities within the research landscape. If one must build, build where you add the most value, and, in all other areas, walk in the excellent shoes of those who have explored this landscape before you. Well-researched and carefully selected service components will pay back in the future in the form of a flexible architecture that can be retooled and redeployed with maximal reuse to address the changing needs of research informatics.

The MTAC uses an ad hoc team approach to conduct technology assessment of selected services and technologies throughout the year. The ad hoc teams may incorporate representatives of equipment users, equipment service providers, physicians, purchasing agents, reimbursement mangers, representatives of administration, and other members from the institution as applicable. 

These examples demonstrate how three different employers provide medical services using a combination of in-house resources, subcontractors, and government agencies. Some of the subcontractors bring their services to the premises in other situations the employees travel to the medical providers. In each case, the employer has selected services based on the special characteristics of the business process, the potential exposures within that process, the business location, and the employee population. Each medical program includes activities aimed at the prevention of exposures, the early recognition and treatment of work-related illnesses and injuries, and a reduction in the severity of and potential for disability from work-related illness and injury. 

The selected service factor considers two general groups of conditions The first encompasses the normal variations in material and pipe manufacture and the second those of the pipe s apphcation and use (environment, hazards, hfe expectancy). The general practice has been to use service factors of not more than 0.5 for static water pressure at 73°F (23°C). Smaller factors are used for more demanding conditions.

Harmonizing with international standards is a particularly timely effort as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) undergoes the revision process for its CSA Z94.1 standard.
