Selection compositional

In order to achieve the desired fiber properties, the two monomers were copolymerized so the final product was a block copolymer of the ABA type, where A was pure polyglycoHde and B, a random copolymer of mostly poly (trimethylene carbonate). The selected composition was about 30—40% poly (trimethylene carbonate). This suture reportedly has exceUent flexibiHty and superior in vivo tensile strength retention compared to polyglycoHde. It has been absorbed without adverse reaction ia about seven months (43). MetaboHsm studies show that the route of excretion for the trimethylene carbonate moiety is somewhat different from the glycolate moiety. Most of the glycolate is excreted by urine whereas most of the carbonate is excreted by expired CO2 and uriae. [Pg.191]

Langer and coworkers synthesized a series of copolymers containing various amounts of diacrylate and amine monomers, investigating copolymer composition with the ability to act as transport DNA into cells. They screened 140 copolymers as synthetic gene-delivery vectors. Of these, 56 were able to bind DNA. These polymers were then screened for their ability to facilitate the transfer of plasmid DNA into a common monkey cancer cell line. Two of the copolymers with quite varied compositions showed good activity—one expected and the other unexpected. The expected copolymer composition would have been a selected composition in a typical search and the other would have been omitted. Thus, combinatorial-like approaches can offer unexpected results to problems. [Pg.715]

During the selectivity kinetic parameter estimation, the relationship for x in terms of C5 - is determined from Eq. (12). For an assumed set of rate constants K, x is calculated for each composition data point such that the experimentally measured C5- equals that estimated from Eq. (12). Selectivity composition profiles as a function of C5- are generated in this manner. The proper selectivity matrix K will be that which minimizes the deviation between experimental and predicted profiles for the hydrocarbons other than C5-, as illustrated in Fig. 10. [Pg.214]

Properties of selected compositions are shown in Table 4.6. The compositions thus obtained have excellent mechanical properties including heat resistance, heat sealability, and impact resistance as well as satisfactory gas permeability. Therefore, the compositions are an appropriate material for producing various structural materials by injection molding. [Pg.123]

Two examples illustrate this point. The enthalpy of formation of gaseous 1-heptene was determined from the enthalpy of hydrogenation to be —62.6 1.6 kJmol-1. The enthalpies of combustion and of vapourization (35.6 0.2 k.I mol 1) of the liquid were later measured, from which the enthalpy of formation of the gas was determined to be — 62.3 1.0 kJ mol-1. Yet Ped-ley did not incorporate the former measurement in the selected value although it is listed among the literature cited. This choice of experimental values is in contrast to a selected composite enthalpy of formation for gaseous 1-pentene which includes an enthalpy of formation derived from the enthalpies of combustion and vapourization of the liquid (—21.5 0.8 kJmol-1) and an enthalpy of formation derived from the equilibrium isomerization of 1-pentene and trails-2-pentene (—21.0 1.4 kJ mol-1). [Pg.602]

Thermobarometry, or the calculation oi P-T conditions from mineral compositions, is not based on mineral zoning, nor does it directly inform processes that cause geochemical zoning. Nonetheless, P-T calculations in metamorphic rocks usually require selecting compositions from minerals that are compositionally heterogeneous. How one selects compositions from a zoned mineral can strongly influence retrieved P and T, and that issue is worth discussion. [Pg.1503]

The solubility of a gas in a mixture of solvents is a problem of interest in many industrial applications. One example is the removal of acidic compounds from industrial and natural gases. The solubility of a gas in a binary mixture containing water has particular importance because it is connected with the solubility of gases in blood, seawater, rainwater, and many other aqueous solutions of biological and environmental significance. Therefore, it is important to be able to predict the gas solubility in a mixture in terms of the solvent composition and the solubilities in the individual constituents of the solvent or in one pure component and a selected composition of the mixed solvent. [Pg.154]
