Scrim coat

Figure 9-2 depicts a typical direct coating unit with scrim coat. This schematic shows a set up utilizing a bed-plate for the application of the pre-coat and a pan for the application of the adhesive scrim coat. Variations of this include a roll over roll for the pre-coat application and a roll over roll or Tillitson application for the adhesive. 

The adhesive scrim coat formulation is similar to the pre-coat with two exceptions. First, since the compound is not frothed, surfactant is ehminated from the formulation. Secondly, since a stronger compound is required for the adhesive coating, filler loading is reduced. Loadings between 350 and 400 parts of filler per 100 parts of dry latex are typical. Table 9-7 is representative of a typical adhesive formulation. 

Another available product has two faces of aluminum foil over a core of glass scrim webbing it is coated with asphalt. The membrane is 0.012 in. thick. This material has not been tested as a barrier against diffusive flow of radon, but its performance should be similar to that of other foil-faced products. Seams are sealed with aluminum tape.

There are also other products produced such as foamed vinyl fabrics (Chapter 8). One method of fabrication is to coat a thin layer of solid plastisol on embossed release paper, then coating a thicker coating of foam plastisol and finally layering on a cloth scrim. The composite is... 

PVC plastisols and latexes are involved in the production of many useful products, including protection of scrim glass fabric used for reinforcement of cementitious boards and other products, production of breathable fabrics woven from coated fibers, fiber optics, and production of various articles (e g., fishing lines or tennis racket string) from coated fibers. The adhesive can be used in the form of a film, scrim or a coating preapplied to one or both adherends, or a ribbon applied to one of the adherends. Liquid adhesives are generally unsatisfactory. Viscoelastic adhesives are particularly suitable. Mitsubishi Chemical manufactures a seismic retrofit material Replark and have formed a joint venture with Fiberite in the USA. Replark is a UD carbon fiber tape with low epoxy resin content with a fiberglass scrim backing to facilitate handling in the field. The second compound used in residential carpet coating is referred to as the adhesive scrim or skip coat It is applied by means of a pan and lick roll directly to the secondary backing. This coating provides the strength necessary to sufficiently adhere the secondary backing to the primary backing, which in turn imparts dimensional stability to the carpet.
