Mirex was detected in 18% of the 1980 samples (maximum concentration, 210 pg/kg [ppb] mean concentration, 0.01 pg/g) and in 13% of the 1984 samples (maximum concentration, 440 pg/kg [ppb] mean concentration, 10 pg/kg). The highest mirex concentrations were detected in whole fish taken from Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the southeastern United States, all areas where mirex had been manufactured or used (Schmitt et al. 1990). In the recent EPA National Study of Chemical Contaminants in Fish, mirex was detected at 38% of 362 sites sampled. The mean mirex concentration was 3.86 pg/kg (ppb) and the maximum concentration was 225 pg/kg (ppb). The highest concentrations of mirex were detected in fish collected in the Lake Ontario area of New York State (EPA 1992a). 

Alain Schmitt, bom 1960, studied veterinary medicine and psychology at the University of Vienna and worked there for nine years on animal and human behaviour subjects. Currently, he is a psychologist at a child protection center in Vienna.

Nitroacetylenes are generally unstable and very explosive and so they have been little studied. Schmitt and co-workers used the nitrodesilylation of trialkylsilylacetylenes with both nitronium salts and nitryl fluoride to obtain nitroacetylenes. Dinitrogen pentoxide has also been used for the nitrodesilylation of trialkylsilylacetylenes. Nitrodestannylation of allylsilanes has also been reported. " ...

A number of SSRIs and SNRIs were tested for their effects on cognitive function in repeated-dose studies in healthy, non-depressed volunteers. Studies with SSRIs before 1999 have been reviewed by Lane and O Hanlon (1999) and some more recent reports deal with nefazodone. paroxetine and sertraline (Furlan et al., 2001 Schmitt et al., 2001 van Laar et al.. 2002). However, considering the populations studied in these trials (non-depressed subjects), the duration of drug administration (1 2 weeks) and the mostly low drug doses used, the relevance of these studies for a clinical situation may be questioned.

The elimination of the sodium hydride was explained by the process given by Margeri-son and Nyss 289). Following Schmitt 296), Comyn and Glasse also proposed 309) that reaction of the anions formed in the a-methylstyrene system would yield deactivated species via reaction with the solvent, THF. Their kinetic study showed 310) that the process given in Eq. (68) was second order in monomer and first order in active centers, which are not consumed in the reaction. The sequence shown as Eq. (69) was found to be first order in active center concentration and in the dimer which is the product of Eq. (68).

Both, the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction and the dialkyl carbonate route may be beneficial, notably when taking into account the former syntheses used to produce these carboxylato derivatives.
