The lines in Fig. 7.4 are the results of theoretical calculations, using models of the respiratory tract (Yu Diu, 1982). The points are measurements with radioactive aerosols. Numerous other determinations of fractional deposition in the whole tract have been made, using non-radioactive methods to count the number of particles in the inhaled and exhaled air (Heyder et al., 1986 Schiller et al., 1988). Fractional deposition is least for particles of about 0.2 to 0.5 m diameter. Table 7.1 shows that the combined effect of sedimentation and Brownian motion is then at a minimum.

Developmental Toxicity. Data regarding the developmental toxicity of hydrazines in humans are not available. Data regarding the developmental effects of hydrazines in animals are limited to a study which reported increased fetal and neonatal mortality following exposure to hydrazine by the parenteral route (Lee and Aleyassine 1970). No apparent developmental effects were seen after oral exposure of pregnant hamsters to 1,2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride (Schiller et al. 1979). Chitosan may be considered as a dietary supplement for reducing body weight in humans. Industrial production of chitosan tablets (Muzzarelli et al., 2000) and chitosan dietary fibers (Hughes, 2002) has occurred. Furthermore, Schiller et al. (2001) reported that a rapidly soluble chitosan (LipoSan Ultra that has a higher density and solubility than chitosan itself) facilitated weight loss and reduced body fat. This effect was due to the fact that this chitosan was able to prevent dietary fat absorption in overweight and mildly obese individuals that consumed a high-fat diet.
