Saponins, health benefits

Tribulus terrestris — A plant found throughout Australia, Asia, Africa, and North and South America. It contains saponins, polysaccharides, sterols, flavonoids, and fatty acids, many of which are indicated to have general health benefits. Tribulus terrestris is a natural testosterone enhancer, shown in clinical studies to increase testosterone levels by aiding in the production of the luteinizing hormone (LH), a hormone that influences sex drive. Tribulus terrestris has been used to increase fertility and aid impotence. [Pg.551]

Panax spp., especially Panax ginseng, are purported to possess various health benefit qualities. In oriental countries it has been used as a traditional panacea for numerous health disorders for several centuries. Saponins are generally recognised as the main effective components of ginseng. Because of their close similarities in terms of structure they offer a real challenge to the analytical chemist in terms of separation. Furthermore, the relative complexity of their structures makes them perfect candidates for in-depth structural characterisation work by NMR. [Pg.229]

Considerable research has identified several potential health benefits associated with increased soy consumption, and soybeans, which contain trypsin inhibitors such as phytic acid, saponins, and phytoestrogens, are now looked upon for potential health benefits. [Pg.586]

Licorice still has medicinal nses becanse it is an expectorant, protects the mucus of the stomach and probably has some antiviral activity as well. Sometimes it is simply a sweetener in medical syraps. Its taste and health benefit are caused by the same family of compounds called triterpenoid saponins, mostly glycyrrhizinic acid, in which two molecules of glucuronic acid are ahached to a triterpenoid base compound through glycosidic bonds. Glycyrrhizinic acid is mostly present in the plant... [Pg.187]

It was only within the last few years that saponins were rediscovered and their presence was noted in a new category of functional foods consisting of nutraceuticals with health benefits. In many plants seeds the major components are hydrocolloids such as fenugreek gum, locust bean gum (LBG), and guar gum with considerably high concentrations of saponins. It is therefore a trend in some labs to search for new saponin-rich plants from which the saponins can be extracted [87]. [Pg.322]

Feedsmffs like legumes contain several compounds that have been traditionally considered antinutrients, such as protease inhibitors, phytate, saponins, plant sterols and isoflavones. However, recent information suggests that most of these compounds may acmaUy benefit the consumer s/ animal s health. Legumes (pulses and soybeans) are excellent foods to increase dietary fibre consumption besides providing starch, vegetable protein, oligosaccharides, phytochemicals (especially the isoflavones in... [Pg.381]
