Second, when Hofmann returned to his laboratory at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals in Basel, he had brought some juice from the Salvia leaves back with him, "preserved in alcohol." When this juice was deemed by self-experiment no longer to be active, Hofmann abandoned his intention to analyze the juice for its psychoactive principle(s). Hofmann reported that the unknown active ingredient must be unstable. This belief was incorrect but tended to inhibit further research for some years. My own reports on the effectiveness of smoking the dried leaves were dismissed by a number of my colleagues. [Pg.166]

It was at this point that Sandoz Pharmaceuticals withdrew its new-drug application, citing unfavorable publicity, and thus cut off most legitimate LSD research in this country. [Pg.406]

Thioridazine, U.S.P. was obtained at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation, East Hanover, NJ. Sodium oleate (Purified Grade) was obtained from Fisher Scientific Company, Springfield, NJ. Polyvinyl alcohol (Type III, Hot Water Soluble, P 1763) was obtained from Sigma Chemical Company, St. Louis, MO. Poly(L-lactide) was prepared by Sandoz Ltd. (Basle, Switzerland) and poly(DL-lactide) by Battelle Columbus Laboratories (Columbus, OH). Other materials were of reagent grade unless otherwise specified. [Pg.215]

In the decades following his invention of LSD, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals chemist Albert Hofmann, Ph.D., continued to synthesize many compounds of significance in medicine. Several of these (notably hydergine, used in the treatment of Alzheimer s disease and depression) have been derivatives of ergot, the same rye mold that provided the precursors for LSD. Hofmann has summarized his life and work in LSD My Problem Child. [Pg.28]

The purpose of the Albert Hofmann Foundation is to maintain a library and world information center dedicated to the scientific study of human consciousness. Our library, art gallery and conference center house an extensive collection of books, journals, research reports, and art, and are open to scholars and the public. The inauguration of the Albert Hofmann Foundation in 1988 marked the 50th anniversary year of the first synthesis of LSD by Dr. Hofmann at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals."... [Pg.58]

The psychoactive compounds in psilocybian mushrooms are psilocybin, psilocin and their N-de and N-di-demethylated analogues. Workers at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and elsewhere have synthesized many related compounds. But only two have been tested in humans (these were lab-coded "CZ-74 and "CY-19 ). [Pg.356]

The first procedure available for analysis of cyclosporine was an RIA developed by Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, the producer of cyclosporine. This immunoassay exhibits approximately 30% cross-reactivity with inactive metabolites, and the test is now considered obsolete. Nonisotopic immunoassays have been developed for whole-blood analysis. HPLC methods have been developed and are used now by many laboratories. A practical HPLC tandem mass spectrometry method is included on this book s accompanying Evolve site, found at http //evolve.elsevier.com/Tietz/ textbook/. [Pg.1276]

Recovery of used solvents by distillation, on site or off site at a central facility, is much easier if each solvent is stored separately. A single solvent for the whole plant would be desirable if a solvent must be used. Sandoz Pharmaceutical (now Novartis) has done this for a process, with the result that they now produce only 1.5 lb of waste per pound of product instead of the former 17.5 lb.16 For an investment of 2.1 million dollars, they save 775,000 dollars/year. Processes that use solvent mixtures should be restudied to see if a single solvent can be used instead. Solvent recovery almost never reaches 100%. A plant extracting oil from soybeans recovered 99.92% by use of desolventizer toasters with fully countercurrent stripping steam.17 It still lost 0.3 gal solvent per ton of... [Pg.202]

A few determined individuals in the medical and research community spent the next two decades attempting to solve the organ rejection puzzle. One of these scientists was Jean-Fran ois Borel (1933-), who worked in Switzerland for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals. He discovered the immunosuppressant agent that ultimately moved transplantation from the realm of curiosity into routine therapy. Both J. Borel and Hartmann Stahelin markedly contributed to the discovery and characterization of the biological profile of the drag. In its subsequent exploitation, Borel played a leading role. He chose to examine a weak compound that... [Pg.21]

Statins can be classified as natural statins and synthetic statins. Lavastatin, simvastatin, and pravastatin are the first three natural statins to reach the market. Lavastatin and pravastatin are natural products isolated from fermentation broths, while simvastatin is a semisynthetic statin derived from lavastatin. Fluvastin was the first truly synthetic statin brought to the market by Sandoz pharmaceutical company (now part of Novartis), and it was obtained by replacing the hexahydro-naphthalene core stiucture of the natural statins with the indole nucleus [5]. It was the discovery of fluvastin that opened up the opportunity of more potent synthetic statins including atorvastatin, the most prescribed drug in the world. [Pg.7]
