Sample Organization

The information structure of sample data and results affects the usability of the systems and the possibility to readily retrieve required sample data. An effective sample organization ensures that sample analysis is available and is understandable for end-users and auditors. Specific functions include statistical processing and trending, reporting, and management of fault cases (exceptions). [Pg.299]


Supersonic molecular beam (SMB) mass spectrometry (SMB-MS) measures the mass spectrum of vibra-tionally cold molecules (cold El). Other studies use soil or sediment samples for a more accurate indication of microbial activity in natural environments. In these samples, organic matter and clay particles play a role in metal toxicity.76112113 Both organic material and clay particles in soil can bind metals and reduce their bioavailability. For example, Pardue et al.87 demonstrated that much less solution-phase cadmium was required to inhibit trichloroaniline (TCA) dechlorination in a mineral-based soil than in a soil containing a higher concentration of organic matter. The preparation of aqueous solutions from solids is usually performed after the sample has been ground to a powder of uniform size. Sometimes, samples can be only sparingly soluble in water and therefore organic solvents may be used to dissolve the sample. Organic solvents can increase the sensitivities of atomic spectrometric analyses as a result of increases in the efficiencies of the nebulization of the analyte solutions. Collection of air samples in stainless steel canisters whose surfaces have been passivated is another common collection technique for VOCs. (Aluminum has also been used but the stability of polar organics in them is poor Gholson et al., 1990.) Indeed, this method is used not only for sampling air but in medical applications as well, where they have been used to sample organics in a single breath (Pleil and Lindstrom, 1995).
