Salt, Epsom Glauber

Electrolytes Common salt, Glauber s salt, Epsom salt... [Pg.275]

In the days of alchemy and the phlogiston theory, no system of nomenclature that would be considered logical ia the 1990s was possible. Names were not based on composition, but on historical association, eg, Glauber s salt for sodium sulfate decahydrate and Epsom salt for magnesium sulfate physical characteristics, eg, spirit of wiae for ethanol, oil of vitriol for sulfuric acid, butter of antimony for antimony trichloride, Hver of sulfur for potassium sulfide, and cream of tartar for potassium hydrogen tartrate or physiological behavior, eg, caustic soda for sodium hydroxide. Some of these common or trivial names persist, especially ia the nonchemical Hterature. Such names were a necessity at the time they were iatroduced because the concept of molecular stmcture had not been developed, and even elemental composition was incomplete or iadeterminate for many substances. [Pg.115]

In order to lower the flame temp of these expls, salts, like NaCl, KCI, Amm chloride, alums, blue vitriol, hydrated Amm oxalate, Glauber s salt, gypsum, borax, Epsom salt, hydrated A1 sulfate, etc, may be incorporated (Ref 23, PP 352 53)... [Pg.238]

Of some interest is the expression derived by Montillon and Badger (1927) who studied the growth of large crystals of Glauber s and Epsom salts under carefully controlled conditions. Their quantitative results were expressed by the following empirical equation... [Pg.250]

So that thou might be Soda. In that case We should be Glauber s Salt. Wert thou Magnesia Instead we d form the salt that s named from Epsom. Our happy union should that compound form, Nitrate of Potash—otherwise Salpetre. [Pg.4]

Relatively large heat effects are usually found in the crystallization of hydrated salts, such as Glauber s salt or epsom salt. In... [Pg.115]

Minor papers by Scheele deal with the preparation of calomel by precipitating a solution of mercurous nitrate with common salt, the preparation of powder of algaroth, sal perlatum (in which he. proved that Meyer s supposed new metal, hydrosiderum from cold-short iron, is iron phosphide), and the preparation of magnesia alba in which Glauber s salt is obtained, by crystallisation from a solution of Epsom salt and common salt, as a by-product. ... [Pg.562]
