Safflower injection

Safflower injection is made from a Chinese materia medica, Carthami Flos (Honghua) and is commonly used to treat cardiovascular diseases. During 2012, the database of National Centre for ADR Morutoring in China had collected 3306 cases of adverse reactions associated with Safflower injection, mainly involving allergic reaction in the skin and respiratory system and its appendices, and arrhythmia. Among them, 154 cases (4.66%) were considered to be serious [11 ]. It has been also reported to cause haematuria [12 ]. [Pg.718]

A 56-year-old woman diagnosed with cerebral circulation insufficiency was given an intravenous infusion of Safflower injection 20 ml in 250 ml 0.9% NaCl once every day. After two days, the patient complained of low back pain and reduced and bloody urination. The urine test showed red blood cell and protein. The Safflower injection was withdrawn immediately, and she was given an infusion of sodium ferulate injection once a day. [Pg.718]

Safflower yellow has immunosuppressive and strong anticoagulant activities and safflower polysaccharide has immunopotentiat-ing effects. Other activities of safflower extracts include cardiac stimulant, vasodilating, hypolipemic, hypotensive, uterine stimulant, and so on. Toxicities are low i.v. LD50 of carthamin in mice is 2.35 0.14g/kg while safe oral dose is >8 g/kg i.p. MLD of decoction in mice is 1.2 g/kg and a 50% injection when dropped in rabbit eye produced no irritation to its conjunctiva. [Pg.682]

Taonis et al. (2002) investigated the effects of dietary fatty acids on insulin signalling in mnscle tissne. For their study, 5-week-old male Wistar rats were fed one of three diets for 4 weeks control (high carbohydrate), n-6 PUFA (58% energy from safflower oil), or n-3 PUFA (39% energy from safflower oil and 19% energy from flsh oil). To determine effects of insulin stimulation, the rats were injected with insulin 7 min before termination. The results of this study showed that insulin-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of IR and IRS was similar in the muscle of the animals fed control and n-3 PUFA diets, but depressed in the animals fed the n-6 PUFA diet. [Pg.268]
