Safety definitions

It is essential to the assessment of safety measures, from a legal as well as from a societal point of view, to have a common understanding of the basic terminology used. Examples are words like hazard or safety. In this context it must be emphasized that the majority of terms expresses probabilities, which are not generally quantifiable. Day to day practice, however, requires certain safety definitions to come up with concrete measures in order to fulfil the promise of safe manufacturing processes. 

The principle of safety definition states that the basic or root causes must be identified before a remedy is prescribed. Safety culture and climate surveys can assist in determining the strengths and weaknesses of a safety culture and help identify the basic causes of a less than acceptable culture. Once the problems have been identified, actions can then be effectively taken. 

The principle of safety definition states that decisions concerning the safety program can only be made if the basic causes of loss-producing events are clearly identified. An audit helps identify these basic causes.
