Safe Materials Storage

In basic terms, it is important to safely store product the first time it is handled. When done properly, there is no need to rehandle product or return to reinforce overloaded shelves or racks. Time is money and time can be saved by doing it right—the first time.

Install fire safe bottom valves Install fire safe valves on major solvent lines Install remote shut off of fuel sources Eliminate points of leakage (flanges, hoses). Replace with fixed/welded pipes Move flammable material storage away from vessel (e.g., pallets, etc.)... 

The incendiary material should be inert and perfectly safe in storage and shipment. Also, it should ignite at the proper time that is, when released on hostile territory. 

A person responsible for the safe storage of explosive materials, including the proper maintenance of explosive materials, storage magazines and areas. 

Many furnace residues (fine powders and salts) deposited in the upper parts of furnaces used for thorium melting operations, are highly pyrophoric and often ignite as the furnace is opened. Such residues may be rendered safe by storage under water for 60-90 days. If the water is drained off early, ignition may occur. See other PYROPHORIC MATERIALS... 

At the other end of the material flow, facilities need proper provisions for the collection and disposal of all kinds of wastes, e.g. animal waste and refuse or contaminated water, soil, or other spent materials. If such waste cannot be disposed immediately provision has also to be made for safe sanitary storage of such waste before removal, by appropriate transportation procedures.
