He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences since 1978, sitting on its board as chairman of its Forestry and Forest Industry Sciences section from 1982 to 1985. He was elected to the World Academy of Art and Science in 1987, and was named a TAPPI Fellow in 2002.

At DTU, he founded and directed the Center for Microbial Biotechnology. Prof. Nielsen has published more than 350 research papers and coauthored more than 40 books, and he is inventor of more than 50 patents. He has founded several companies that have raised more than 20 mUhon in venture capital. He has received numerous Danish and international awards and is member of the Academy of Technical Sciences (Denmark), the National Academy of Engineering (USA), the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

The Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences, and other professional organizations scathingly criticized the committee s 1997 report Towards a Sustainable Chemicals Policy.7 Expert criticism meant little to the Minister of Environment at that time (now Minister of Foreign Affairs), Anna Lindh, who, in the case of the alleged dangerous properties of PVC, declared that she had more confidence in Greenpeace than in the Academy of Sciences.

For fourteen years Ingvar was a member of the Nobel Conunittee for physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and chaired the Conunittee for three years at the end of this period (1989-91). He served on the Swedish Natural Science Research Council (NFR) 1971-77 and was entrusted in 1991 with the task of evaluating the Swedish National Research Facilities.
