Routing and formation

Sir Joseph Swan, as a result of his quest for carbon fiber for lamp filaments (2), learned how to denitrate nitrocellulose using ammonium sulfide. In 1885 he exhibited the first textiles made from this new artificial sHk, but with carbon fiber being his main theme he failed to foUow up on the textile possibihties. Meanwhile Count Hilaire de Chardoimet (3) was researching the nitrocellulose route and had perfected his first fibers and textiles in time for the Paris Exhibition in 1889. There he got the necessary financial backing for the first Chardoimet silk factory in Besancon in 1890. His process involved treating mulberry leaves with nitric and sulfuric acids to form cellulose nitrate which could be dissolved in ether and alcohol. This collodion solution could be extmded through holes in a spinneret into warm air where solvent evaporation led to the formation of soHd cellulose nitrate filaments. [Pg.344]

Coproductioa of ammonium sulfate is a disadvantage of the formamide route, and it has largely been supplanted by processes based on the direct hydrolysis of methyl formate. If the methanol is recycled to the carbonylation step the stoichiometry corresponds to the production of formic acid by hydration of carbon monoxide, a reaction which is too thermodynamicaHy unfavorable to be carried out directly on an iadustrial scale. [Pg.504]

Inhalation is the chief route of worker exposure. Comparative data from acute or subchronic inhalation exposures with rats (98) indicate that nitromethane and nitroethane are the least toxic of the nitroparaffins by this route and do not induce methemoglobin formation. The nitropropanes are less well tolerated 2-nitropropane is more toxic than 1-nitropropane and is more likely to cause methemoglobinemia. [Pg.103]

For sodium palmitate, 5-phase is the thermodynamically preferred, or equiUbrium state, at room temperature and up to - 60° C P-phase contains a higher level of hydration and forms at higher temperatures and CO-phase is an anhydrous crystal that forms at temperatures comparable to P-phase. Most soap in the soHd state exists in one or a combination of these three phases. The phase diagram refers to equiUbrium states. In practice, the drying routes and other mechanical manipulation utilized in the formation of soHd soap can result in the formation of nonequilibrium phase stmcture. This point is important when dealing with the manufacturing of soap bars and their performance. [Pg.152]

Decomposition of Thiols. Thiols decompose by two principal paths (i43— i45). These are the carbon—sulfur bond homolysis and the unimolecular decomposition to alkene and hydrogen sulfide. For methanethiol, the only available route is homolysis, as in reaction 29. For ethanethiol, the favored route is formation of ethylene and hydrogen sulfide via the unimolecular process, as in reaction 30. [Pg.13]

Over the years the literature is filled with examples where the initial characterization was incorrect. One example is illustrated below. In 1940, Sethna and Shah presumed that they synthesized coumarins 42 and 43 from a reaction between P-orcacetophenone (44) and its 4-0-methyl ether 45 under standard Kostanecki-Robinson conditions, respectively. Three decades later Bose and Shah synthesized coumarin 43 via another route and concluded that the initial assignment made by Sethna and Shah was incorrect. After the Bose and Shah findings were published, Ahluwalia and Kumar concluded that the Sethna and Shah products were actually chromones 46 and 47 based on proton NMR data and chemical derivatization. Despite these shortcomings, the Kostanecki-Robinson reaction remains an effective method for formation of both coumarins and chromones. [Pg.527]

The strategy of Kaeriyama represents a so-called precursor route and was developed to overcome the characteristic shortcomings (insolubility, lack of process-ability) of previous PPP syntheses. The condensation reaction is carried out with solubilized monomers, leading to a soluble polymeric intermediate. In the final reaction step this intermediate is then converted, preferentially in the solid state allowing the formation of homogeneous PPP films or layers, into PPP (or other poly(arylene)s). [Pg.33]

All the trihalides are mixed valence compounds. PtF3 is isostructural with PdF3- PtX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) cannot be made by straightforward thermal decomposition of PtX4 [22] under open conditions but by routes involving continuous decomposition and formation under closed, equilibrium conditions. [Pg.178]

The cohesive energy per carbon atom in a poly-yne ring is only 99.1 kcal/mol, clearly lower than the value in Cc. Anticipating a long and complicated route of formation when starting from graphite, in does not seem likely that any of the larger clusters observed experimentally would have a linear or cyclic chain structure. [Pg.43]

As indicated by the mechanism, carboalumination is a syn addition. The resulting vinylalanes react with electrophiles with net retention of configuration. The electrophiles that have been used successfully include iodine, epoxides, formaldehyde, and ethyl chloroformate.229 We will also see in Chapter 8 that the vinylalanes can undergo exchange reactions with transition metals, opening routes for formation of carbon-carbon bonds. [Pg.356]

The clinical presentation of osteomyelitis may vary depending on route and duration of infection, as well as patient-specific factors such as infection site, age, and comorbidities. In hematogenous osteomyelitis, the patient typically experiences systemic and localized signs and symptoms.3 4 7 12 13 In comparison, patients with chronic infection typically present with only localized signs and symptoms.4 6 A cardinal sign of chronic osteomyelitis is the formation of sinus tracts with purulent drainage.2,3,6... [Pg.1180]

Nanoparticles show great promise as devices for the controlled release of drugs, provided that the choice of material for nanoparticle formation is made with the appropriate considerations of the drug cargo, administration route, and the desired site of action. The use of nano- and microparticles as controlled drug-delivery devices has recently been extensively reviewed [97]. [Pg.519]
