Rotary kiln lining

Chevroning. Fault-like planes in rotary kiln linings. The bricks between adjacent fault planes are tilted out of alignment with a V or chevron end to the displaced region. Ovality of the kiln structure is one cause. [Pg.60]

Bauxite is used for refractory materials production which is used mainly in the steel industry for transport ladles and electric arc furnace roofs, and in the cement and lime industry for rotary kiln linings. Besides, there are three aluminium polymorphs used in refractory industry, namely sUlimanite, andalusite and kyanite, which share the same simple chemical formula (A SiOs). Those minerals differ in their crystallographic structures and stabilities with respect to both pressure and temperature and sillimanite is most desirable as a refractory raw material, as it fires with little or no change in volume and requires no pre-firing. LIBS is very helpful in... [Pg.529]

A furnace is a device (enclosure) for generating controlled heat with the objective of performing work. In fossil-fuel furnaces, the work appHcation may be direct (eg, rotary kilns) or indirect (eg, plants for electric power generation). The furnace chamber is either cooled (waterwaH enclosure) or not cooled (refractory lining). In this article, furnaces related to metallurgy such as blast furnaces ate excluded because they ate coveted under associated topics (see... [Pg.140]

Direct rotary kiln. This is a metal cyhnder lined on the interior with insulating block and/or refractory brick. It is suitable for high-temperature operations. [Pg.1200]

The hrst production step involves recovery of the metal from spodumene. The naturahy occurring ore, alpha-spodumene is heated in a brick-lined rotary kiln at a temperature between 1,075 to 1,100°C. This converts the alpha form to a more reactive form, beta-spodumene. The beta form is heated in a rotary kiln at 250°C with an excess of 93% sulfuric acid. The metal reacts with acid forming hthium sulfate. The kiln discharge is leached with water to separate water-soluble hthium sulfate from several impurity metals. Aqueous solution containing excess sulfuric acid is then neutrahzed by treatment with an excess of ground calcium carbonate (limestone). The solution is fdtered to... [Pg.487]

The rotary kiln is simple in concept, but difficult to operate in practice. The rotary kiln is a refractory lined, steel cylinder mounted horizontally on trunions and riding rings. It is pitched slightly toward the discharge end to facilitate material flow through the kiln. The kiln is fed from the high end and can be fed either whole tires or TDF chips. It can be fired internally or heated externally. [Pg.302]

The oldest and newest coke calciners in North America (which accounts for almost 75% of the free world capacity) are rotary kilns similar to those employed by the cement industry. The original versions were quite unsophisticated, consisting merely of long, inclined, refractory lined, steel cylinders which were attached by a breeching to a stack at the upper end which provided the necessary... [Pg.180]

To improve energy efficiency, refractories with superior K factors are used in lining the kiln, thus reducing radiant heat losses. Moreover, kiln mounted blowers now inject combustion air into the kilns in the zone where the volatiles evolve from the coke, thus permitting utilization of the Btu content in these previously wasted gases. In modern calciners, most of the energy required is obtained by burning the coke volatiles and fine particulate matter in the kiln. In some instances, rotary kilns equipped with kiln mounted blowers actually operate without external fuel (except for start-up). When these units are also equipped with incinerators (to combust the unburned volatiles and emitted coke fines) and waste... [Pg.181]

Liquid or pulverized solid fuels are blown into the kiln through a nozzle with primary air. Additional secondary air is drawn into the kiln through the clinker cooler. The flame in the rotary kiln must meet several requirements. The clinker must be correctly burned, so as to minimize its content of free lime, with the least expenditure of fuel. The ash from a solid fuel must be uniformly absorbed by the clinker. For normal Portland cements, the conditions must be sufficiently oxidizing that the iron is present as Fe however, for white cements, mildly reducing conditions may be preferable. Proper flame control also extends the life of the refractory lining of the kiln. Computer-aided or fully automated control of kiln operating conditions is increasingly used. [Pg.69]

Bricks are commonly made in standard configurations known as straights, arches, keys, wedges, rotary kiln blocks, etc. Numerous guides are available from refractory suppliers which provide assistance in selection of standard brick shapes and combinations required to provide structurally sound linings. [Pg.210]
