Beta spodumene

The hrst production step involves recovery of the metal from spodumene. The naturahy occurring ore, alpha-spodumene is heated in a brick-lined rotary kiln at a temperature between 1,075 to 1,100°C. This converts the alpha form to a more reactive form, beta-spodumene. The beta form is heated in a rotary kiln at 250°C with an excess of 93% sulfuric acid. The metal reacts with acid forming hthium sulfate. The kiln discharge is leached with water to separate water-soluble hthium sulfate from several impurity metals. Aqueous solution containing excess sulfuric acid is then neutrahzed by treatment with an excess of ground calcium carbonate (limestone). The solution is fdtered to... [Pg.487]

Spodumene is by far the most important lithium-containing ore and is used in the manufacture of lithium carbonate. Spodumene ore (benehciated to 3 to 5% Li20) is converted from the alpha form to the beta form by heating to over 1000°C, since the alpha form is not attacked by hot sulfuric acid. The water-soluble lithium sulfate is leached out and reacted with sodium carbonate to yield lithium carbonate from which various salts are derived. [Pg.297]

The current primary method for production of lithium is by electrolysis. Spodumene, the most plentiful lithium bearing ore, is beneficiated to 3 to 5% Li20 and heated to 1000°C to convert it from its alpha form to its beta form. The beta form is treated with sulfuric acid to form Li2S04. The Li2S04 is water-soluble and is leached and reacted with sodium carbonate to form lithium carbonate. The lithium carbonate is then reacted with hydrochloric acid to form lithium chloride. Anhydrous lithium chloride is used to produce lithium metal by electrolysis (Austin 1984). [Pg.140]
