NOTE The scale on the dial normally does not read directly in volts. Common scales are 100,240, and 280. These were made for European systems. For a 220 volt line, the 280 represents the peak-io-peak voltage, and the 240 represents the root mean square voltage. For example, if 55 volts were needed in a heating mantle, a Variac with a 240 scale plugged into a 110 volt line would have to be adjusted to 120 (half of 240). 

In order to safeguard against electric shock at the far end of the cable, where the AC root mean square voltage may exceed 50 V, the earth loop impedance must be limited to a particular value. This value is such that the fault current should only be passed by the protective device at the supply for a specific period of time, i.e. to satisfy the /-squared- criterion given in sub-section 13.1.1. The correlation of loop impedance, current and time varies with the type of protective device, e.g. fuse.

A monitoring system can analyze such parameters as count, hit, event, rise time, duration, peak amplitude, energy, RMS (root mean square) voltage, frequency spectrum, and arrival-time difference as discussed in Chapter 4. Normally AE signals are processed after the amplitude becomes larger than the threshold level. 

Dielectric strength (electric strength) n. A measure of the voltage required to puncture an insulating material, expressed in volts per mil of thickness (SI V/rrmi). It turns out that to determine the effective value of a sine wave, you have to do the following. First divide up the top half of the ac into very small slices (the "increments" of calculus), and then square each one of these short-term voltages. The next step is to figure out the average value (the mean ) of these squared slices. Then take the square root of this mean. This is called the "root mean square" voltage, or "RMS." It is not the same as the simple average, and also it does not work for odd shapes such as sawtooth waves.
