Roll-forming terms

The term pass line is frequently used by the industry, but it is seldom clearly defined. According to one definition, pass line is measured from the top machined surface of the rollforming mill bed to the bottom of a usually horizontal section of the roll-formed product at the last pass, where the top and bottom rolls have the same circumferencial speed. Occasionally, the pass line measured from the floor is also given. The pass line can also be defined as the point between the last pass top and bottom rolls having the same circumferencial speed (Fig. 6). [Pg.463]

Parallel /3 structure usually forms large, moderately twisted sheets such as in Fig. 23, although occasionally it rolls up into a cylinder with helices around the outside (e.g., triosephosphate isomerase). Large antiparallel sheets, on the other hand, usually roll up either partially (as in the first domain of thermolysin or in ribonuclease) or completely around to join edges into a cylinder or barrel. Wear by roll formation is where there is progressive tearing of a layer of rubber which forms a roll. The result is a characteristic abrasion pattern of ridges and grooves at right angles to the direction of movement.
