Role of added

If an ionic surfactant is present, the potentials should vary as shown in Fig. XIV-5c, or similarly to the case with nonsurfactant electrolytes. In addition, however, surfactant adsorption decreases the interfacial tension and thus contributes to the stability of the emulsion. As discussed in connection with charged monolayers (see Section XV-6), the mutual repulsion of the charged polar groups tends to make such films expanded and hence of relatively low rr value. Added electrolyte reduces such repulsion by increasing the counterion concentration the film becomes more condensed and its film pressure increases. It thus is possible to explain qualitatively the role of added electrolyte in reducing the interfacial tension and thereby stabilizing emulsions. [Pg.508]

The catalytic activity for the selective reduction of NO with CH4 was significantly enhanced by the addition of precious metals, particularly Ir, to ln/H-ZSM-5. The role of added Ir was not only to promote NO oxidation which is a necessary step for NO reduction, but also to enhance the abilities of the catalyst to adsorb NO zind to increase the amount of NO2 adsorbed on In sites. [Pg.679]

Molecular size has previously been suggested to play a role for substrate recognition by P-gp [28]. Surface activity measurements provide the cross-sectional area, Ad, of substrates and thus allow one to investigate the role of Ad in interaction with P-gp. Combining Eqs. (2) and (6) yields... [Pg.467]

These two reactions are competitive around 1250 K. Note that in Channel 1, two NO molecules react to form one N2 and one NO so that an overall reduction in NO is obtained. The role of added H2 manifests itself by increasing the amount of chain branching at the lower temperatures and increasing the overall concentration of OH. Thus the window shifts to lower temperatures. [Pg.440]

Fahey s school has produced a series of very interesting papers dealing with the addition of HCl to various olefins in acetic acid. Kinetic studies including isotope effects and the role of added chloride ions were coupled with detailed product analysis. Styrene and fer-butylethylene ) were found to react with molecidar HCl (or its ion-pair form) in a typical AdE2 fashion ... [Pg.43]

We can conclude that the lack of specific studies dealii with the exact role of added protogenic substances in these systems precludes for the moment any meaningful mechanistic conclusions about these presumed cocatalytic processes ... [Pg.178]

Methanol synthesis from H2/CO2 has been studied so feir in relation to that from H2/C0.[2,3] One of the reasons studied before is due to an interesting phenomenon that an addition of small amoimt CO2 into H2/CO feed improves methanol 5deld significantly in the industrial process.[2] The role of added CO2 was noted. Rozovskii showed by tracer analysis study that carbon species of produced methanol originated from CO2 in the H2/CO feed, suggesting methanol was produced via C02.[4] Recent researches have been aiming at the development of highly efficient catalysts for methanol synthesis for the industrial process. [Pg.20]

The mechanistic counterparts can be easily recognized by comparing the reaction scheme (F1)-(F4) with the one for H2 oxidation discussed in the last section. The direct oxidation path (FI) accounts for most of the oxidation current and thus corresponds to the H2 oxidation current. At potentials cathodic to OH adsorption, CO slowly poisons the surface according to (F2) it is removed in reaction (F4). Hence, (F2) and (F4) play the role of ad- and desorption of the metal ions, respectively. Neglecting the indirect path for a moment, the adsorption of OH (F3), being a fast process, will lead to a decrease in the oxidation current stemming from the direct path, and induce a negative slope in the polarization curve, just... [Pg.45]

Since UME measurements can readily be made with and without supporting electrolyte (44), the role of added electrolytes on dissolution processes can be identified. [Pg.538]

The roles of added metal ions are summarized as follows. [Pg.372]

Prevalence of Ad-36 antibodies in human population may vary by the geographic locations. Only 5% of the subjects screened in Denmark had antibodies to Ad-36 (Raben et al., 2001). Ad-36 is the first human virus reported to show an association with human obesity. Due to ethical reasons, it is not possible to infect humans with a virus, which precludes unequivocal demonstration of causative role of Ad-36 in human obesity. Future experiments are likely to generate indirect and circumstantial evidence. [Pg.89]

Since these initial publications, the considerable efforts of Shibasaki and coworkers have lead to lanthanide element-binaphtholato complexes as being the most developed and potent of asymmetric phospho-aldol catalysts. From their early work on catalysis in the nitro-aldol reaction [28], Shibasaki and co-workers have published widely and in considerable detail on the use of hetero-bimetallic catalysis, developing the field to such a degree that enzyme-like comparisons have been made. Much of the success of the Shibasaki team in hetero-bimetallic catalysis has been reviewed recently [29], the key to which has been the delineation of the solid state structures of the catalytic precursors via single crystal X-ray diffraction studies [30] (Fig. 1) and the development of improved synthetic routes to this class of heterobimetallic system (Scheme 12) which emphasise the important role of added water [31]. [Pg.52]

TBAF can promote hiaryl formation from triaflyl(aryl)silanes and a wide variety of aryl halide suhstrates. For example, chlorobenzenes undergo smooth cross-couphng with triallyl(aryl)silanes to give biaryls in good to excellent yields (eq 31). Surprisingly, an appreciable amount of added water is required to achieve high yields however, the role of added water is not yet clear. In a recent variant of the Hiyama reaction, TBAF and palladium-coated nickel nanoclusters were employed to prepare biaryl compounds from aryl bromides and phenyltrimethoxysilane. ... [Pg.461]

Specific results that have been published include the work of Balasz et. al. who have completed extensive self-consistent calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the effect of adding copolymers to a blend on the interfacial tension of the biphase. Additionally, Kramer and others have utilized experimental techniques to determine the mechanism of fracture that occurs at a biphasic interface in the presence or absence of copolymer" - Macosko, however, has viewed the problem from an engineering perspective and has examined the role of added copolymer on the blend morphology that results from typical processing condition. [Pg.70]

Other recent studies focused on the understanding of the role of ad-atoms on the catalytic performance (in terms of both catalytic activity and glycerol oxidation overpotential) of Pt-based [11,65] and Pd-based [32,66] materials towards glycerol electro-oxidation in acidic and alkaline medium. [Pg.89]

Finally, the ad-atoms may cause local electronic changes on the substrate, thus affecting the reactant-substrate interactions. The role of ad-atoms on the modification of the catalytic properties of metal surfaces has been extensively studied (30- 32). The behavior of these systems has been rationalized in terms of changes in adsorption bond strength of the reactant species caused by changes in catalyst (metal) work function, which results from the electronic interactions of the ad-atoms with the active metal surface (30-32). [Pg.928]

The mechanism and kinetics of the reactions of oxygen with polymer radicals produced during radiolysis have been studied and extensively reviewed by Gillen, Clough, and co-workers (117,406-409), who have contributed greatly to this field. The roles of added polymer antioxidants and stabilizers have also been reviewed... [Pg.6876]
