According to the different sentinel species analyzed, THg levels in specimens collected downstream from the impacted areas are 10-20 times greater than upstream levels. It clearly points out the relevance of chlor-alkali plants in terms of mercury river pollution.

Compounds of this series are actively accumulated by the inhabitants of water ecosystems (both plants and animals). It was shown that fish in rivers, polluted with dioxin-containing industrial wastewaters, could accumulate up to 0,1-0,2 mcg/kg. As much as 80% of dioxin is laid in fish skeleton and visceral fat about 10% comes in liver, and 2% - in muscles.

River pollution from anionic surfactants, the primarily toxic ones, is of two types (a) acute toxic pollution due to, for example, an accidental spill from a container of full-strength surfactant products, and (b) chronic pollution due to the daily discharges of municipal and industrial wastewaters. The international literature contains the result of numerous studies that have established dosages for both types of pollutional toxicity due to detergents, for most types of aquatic life such as species of fish. 

Por example, populations of Osmunda regalis (royal fern) near a river polluted with industrial wastes have higher frequencies of chromosomal aberrations than populations in a less polluted site.210 However, more developmental work is required before the monitoring of natural plant populations can be assessed adequately, particularly because appropriate control populations are difficult to identify and more general cytogenetic information is needed on natural populations.

River Pollution. The sampling plan has to allow for the variations in flow rate and concentrations of nutrients in different parts of the river. So it is not adequate simply to sample the middle of the river. The study might be related to the effects of sewage works (anticipating increased loads of ammonia and phosphate or the suspected leaching of nitrate from agricultural land).
