Rigor work done

Since it is now evident that extremely rigorous drying of all reagents is essential to prevent the formation of tert-mm in these systems, all previous work done under less stringent conditions, which purported to prove that tert-oxonium ions are essential features of the polymerisation initiated by anhydrous perchloric acid, must be discounted. In other words, we see no reason to deny the existence of tert-oxon um ions in those systems in which Jaacks and his collaborators alleged that they found them indeed, considering their experimental conditions in the light of what we have found out since then, it is entirely credible that in some of their studies the tertiary ions were dominant. [Pg.749]

Resource Description Format (RDF) is a way of making statements about subject-object-predicate triples. The subject, object, and predicate of each statement should each, at least in principle, have a Universal Resource Identifier (URI). Much of this chapter will be devoted to describing existing schemes for assigning URIs to subjects and objects. Rather less, and less rigorous, work has been done on predicates. [Pg.152]

In short, cell fractionation, which is composed of three steps—homogenization, fractionation, and analysis—can be an excellent way to locate an enzyme within the cell. The reader is referred to the excellent commentary by ap Rees (1995), in which the rigorous criteria to follow so that a cell fractionation provides good, reliable information is summarized. The author concludes that work done on soybean protoplasts (Macdonald and ap Rees, 1983), wheat endosperm protoplasts (Entwistle and ap Rees, 1988), wheat endosperm (Tetlow et al., 1993), pea embryos (Denyer and Smith, 1988), and pea roots (Borchert et al., 1993) provides further support for the view that ADPGlc PPase essentially is confined to the plastid. [Pg.118]

These properties are common to all definitions of bond energy terms. The advantage of the present scheme is that the qa in any molecule are defined rigorously by the properties of that molecule only. The definition does not imply constancy of bond energy terms from molecule to molecule. These q can be visualized as the work done to stretch two bonded atoms from their original position in a molecule to an infinite distance, while at the same time... [Pg.115]

In contrast to the present treatment there are two types of earlier theories of refraction of light. Yvon32 has developed a statistical-mechanical theory of the refractive index. This theory is set up in such a way that an explicit expression is obtained for the index of refraction. It does not, however, contain an analysis of the optical phenomena (such as the extinction of the incident field) which are involved. These last aspects are considered very carefully in the other, electrodynamic, type of theory, which Hoek,8 following work done by a number of authors, has presented with great rigor. The disadvantage of this second method is that macroscopic quantities are not obtained by statistical-mechanical methods, but by averaging the microscopic quantities oVer physically infinitesimal volume elements. The result is that almost all the effect of density fluctuations is lost. Both of the theories mentioned assume furthermore thp molecular polarizability to be a constant independent of intermolecular distances. [Pg.336]

In thermodynamics, the quantity fV is defined as the work done by the system on its surroundings in a specified change of state along a specified path. The path must be specified, since dW is an inexact differential form. Physically, the line integral depends upon the path because of the inclusion of dissipative forces. Rigorously, the definition of W demands that the initial and the final states of the system be equilibrium states. The work done by the system when the only external force is a uniform normal pressure is given by... [Pg.15]

The polemic also spread out to U.S.A., where the Vice President decided to order a rigorous investigation regarding the health effects of flexible PVC. Results obtained by the American Council on Science and Health were pubhshed in June 1999. The use of DINP in toys was favored ...Based on its review of available scientific data and exposure estimates for DINP, the panel concludes that DINP in flexible toys is unlikely to pose a health risk to children... . In spite of all the work done so far, various associations show little confidence in reports, arguing that scientists may have been influenced by PVC manufacturers. [Pg.449]

The prototype ES should be evaluated by a group of potential users and, if possible, also by a panel of experts who have not been involved in its creation. The former can assess the look-and-feel of the software while the latter can more rigorously verify that the system is functioning correctly. This evaluation is best done without the expert panel having direct access to the ES. They may work by generating a query, which is then answered either by the ES or by a human expert, and the answer returned without indication of its origin. If the ES performs as well as, or better than the human expert, this... [Pg.232]

Couf/on. Working with MAO has to be done under rigorous safety precautions Wearing of safety goggles and protective gloves is a must. MAO is highly reactive It reacts with moisture traces on the skin. If MAO is spilled, the contaminated area has to be covered with sand to prevent a fire. Then, MAO is hydrolyzed by the careful addition of 2-propanol or ethanol, followed by water (see also Example 3-28). [Pg.229]

The volume of tabular information necessary to record in detail the thermodynamic data for the paraffin hydrocarbons and their mixtures, as was done for steam, is excessive. It appears hopeful that graphical generalizations typified by the work of Edmister (19) will prove adequate for the less rigorous requirements of design, whereas the Benedict equation of state (4) may be employed where precision is necessary. However, the effective application of this equation of state to compounds containing more than four carbon atoms per molecule still awaits the evaluation of the constants. After the composition and specific volume have been established for a particular state, the solution of equations of state to establish enthalpy and entropy is a straightforward process. [Pg.381]
