Overall, Sweden has an excellent record for most civil liberties, and the prime minister, Goran Persson, boasts of his aim to make Sweden an ethical superpower. Sadly, however, Sweden s exemplary performance in most areas of civil rights does not extend to all aspects of the Convention on Human Rights. In particular, Sweden does not guarantee its citizens the right to a hearing of appeals to certain types of government actions. 

I joined the faculty at MIT as an assistant professor. I believed that civil rights and affirmative action had solved gender discrimination and that I would not encounter it in my lifetime. I thought the only reason there were so few women on the science faculty at Harvard, where I had been a student, or MIT was that women had children and remained their primary caretakers and that men who did the type of science I was trying to do worked six or seven days a week, 10 to 12 hours a day. So it was pretty obvious why there weren t any women there how could you do these two full-time jobs at once ... 

It is soiously questionable and debated that civil liability is suited as an instrument to remedy environmental damage. Remedial action should remain primarily within the domain of public law and it is up to the States to decide what public instruments they are going to use to restore damage to the environment. Civil liability is only seen to have a role in compensating damage suffered by a party to his person, property or proprietary rights. If the EEOC, in their investigation, determines that there is reasonable cause that discrimination has taken place. Title VII provides that the EEOC, or the individual applicant or employee with a right-to-sue notice, can begin a legal action in federal district court if specific conditions are met including jurisdiction, time limitations, complaint drafting requirement and other specific requirements. Safety professionals should also be aware that class action lawsuits are permitted under Title VII, however, there are very specific requirements under Rule 23 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, as well as other requirements which must be met to certify the class action. 

Any person aggrieved may bring a civil action in any court of competent jurisdiction for such legal or equitable relief as will effectuate the purposes of this chapter Provided, That the right of any person to bring such action shall terminate upon the commencement of an action by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to enforce the right of such employee under this chapter. 

A tort is an action that harms another. It occurs when a person acts or fails to act, without right, and as a result another is harmed. Torts involve civil actions for personal injuries or property damage rather than a criminal action or a contractual claim. Torts encompass a very broad area of the law, including intentional acts, negligence, and strict liability (Oleck, 1982). 

Para 1 Whoever deliberately and negligently injures the life, health, freedom, property, or any other civil right of another person shall be liable to make restitution for any damage resulting from such action. 

Breach of a duty imposed on an employer by these Regulations shall not confer a right of action in any civil proceedings insofar as that duty applies for the protection of persons not in his employment.
