Rice stem borer

Ecdysteroids are generally regarded as not being able to penetrate insect cuticle readily [179], However, the rice stem borer, C. suppressalis, has a thin cuticle which allows ecdysteroids to penetrate when ligated last instar larvae are dipped into a methanolic solution of the test compound for 5 s [180], The proportion of pupated abdomina are assessed after 48 h. The pheromone of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, is a mixture of two aldehydes, (Z)-ll-hexadecenal and (Z)-13-octa-decenal. Field-cage trials carried out in the Philippines at the International Rice Research Institute showed that the fully stabilised microencapsulated formulations of these aldehydes persisted for over 30 days and virtually eliminated the laying of fertile eggs during this period (6). 

EPN is a contact and stomach poison insecticide and acaricide for control of boll weevils, bollworms, European corn borers, rice stem borers, tobacco budworms, and so on. It has an oral LD in rats of 8-36 mg/kg. 

Fenobucarb is used for control of leafhoppers, plant hoppers, rice stem borers, rice bugs, bollworms, aphids on rice plants, sugarcane, tea, cotton, wheat, and vegetables. Its oral LD50 in rats is -640 mg/kg. 

Cartap hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum insecticide used for control of coleopterous, lepidopterous, and sucking insects, especially Colorado potato beetles, diamondback moths, rice stem borers, and thrips on rice and vegetables. Its oral LD30 in rats is 345 mg/kg.

As the compound 47(5-N,N-dimethylamino-l,2,3 trithiane) was found to have the same strong insecticidal effect as Nereistoxin especially against rice stem borers, the ganglionic blocking activity by the compound 47 in adult male American Cockroach was investigated to reveal the insecticidal action of the compound.
