Rh factors

Describe how the Rh factor may lead to hemolytic disease of the newborn... [Pg.227]

Another type of cell surface antigen found on red blood cells is the Rh factor. Red blood cells that contain the Rh factor are referred to as Rh-positive and RBCs without this factor are referred to as Rh-negative. This antigen also stimulates antibody production. Therefore, Rh-negative individuals that produce anti-Rh antibodies should receive only Rh-negative blood. Rh-positive individuals that do not produce anti-Rh antibodies can receive Rh-negative or Rh-positive blood. Approximately 85% of Caucasians are Rh-positive and 15% are Rh-negative. Over 99% of Asians, 95% of American blacks, and 100% of African blacks are Rh-positive. [Pg.230]

Other studies have seemed to implicate blood groupings (including Rh factors in one case) in toxemia of pregnancy, bronchopneumonia, fertility, abortions, oat cell lung tumors, and squamous cell carcinomas of the lung. 10,11... [Pg.75]

The Problem You have type B+ blood and need a blood transfusion. You can use either type-0 or type-B blood and can use either a + or - RH factor. What is the probability that a person selected at random can be a donor for you ... [Pg.111]

Type 0 is called the "universal donor" because the cells have no antigen to provoke a deadly antigen-antibody reaction. If the other blood factors (Rh factor, for example) are compatible, type 0 can be donated to people with the other blood types. [Pg.1136]

In 1942 Calvin married Genevieve Jemtegaard. After their first child Elin s death, related to Rh factor incompatibility, Calvin and his wife were part of an interdisciplinary project that investigated the etiology of the disease. They helped to determine the composition and structure of the Rh factor, named elinin for their daughter. [Pg.187]

Exogenous oxytocin most commoniy is used for induction of iabor, wherein it improves uterine contractions to achieve eariy vaginai deiivery for fetai or maternai reasons (e.g., preeciampsia, Rh factor probiems, pregnancy that has exceeded 42 weeks), it aiso finds use foiiowing deiivery of the piacenta, because it promotes contraction and vasoconstriction and heips to controi postpartum bieeding. [Pg.317]

Implementation of the above decision will be preceded by a transition period during which existing national guidelines will still be applicable. In addition, a science-based approach will be taken to ensure correct evaluation when submitted data is based on conditions that are less stressful than those required (e.g. 30°C /65% RH). Factors to be taken into consideration include ... [Pg.58]
