Retreatment

The importance of the solid-liquid interface in a host of applications has led to extensive study over the past 50 years. Certainly, the study of the solid-liquid interface is no easier than that of the solid-gas interface, and all the complexities noted in Section VIM are present. The surface structural and spectroscopic techniques presented in Chapter VIII are not generally applicable to liquids (note, however. Ref. 1). There is, perforce, some retreat to phenomenology, empirical rules, and semiempirical models. The central importance of the Young equation is evident even in its modification to treat surface heterogeneity or roughness. ... [Pg.347]

The emphasis in the foregoing analysis was explaining the range of exponents which describe the dependence of [r ] on M. In this section we retreat a bit from this objective and reexamine Eqs. (9.40) and (9.44) without regard to the molecular weight dependence of the individual factors ... [Pg.610]

When the ore contains a large amount of clay minerals, these form difficult to separate slimes, which hinder the recovery of the minerals (see Clays). The tailing from the scavenger cells can be cycloned to remove the slimes before the coarse material is floated in a tailings retreatment plant. The flotation product from the rougher cells of this plant can be reground and cleaned. This additional treatment of the tailings from the main copper flotation plant may improve the recovery of metal values by 1—3%. [Pg.197]

Since polar solvents would be expected to stabilize polar forms, a retreat towards the hydroxy tautomer (71) would be predicted in solvents less polar than water, and in the vapour phase. This is borne out in practice at equilibrium both 2- and 4-hydroxypyridine (as well as the 3-hydroxy compound, which even in water exists as an approximate 1 1 mixture of OH and NH forms) exist as such, rather than as the pyridinones. However, the 2- and 4-quinolinones remain in the NH (keto) forms, even in the vapour phase. Hydrocarbon or other solvents of very low polarity would be expected to give results similar to those in the vapour phase, but intermolecular association by hydrogen bonding often leads to a considerably greater proportion of polar tautomers being present than would otherwise have been predicted (77ACR186, 78JOC177). [Pg.26]

Not only do the new and old surfaces produce surface plasmons in the island-growth mode, but the interlace between the growing film and the substrate is also capable of producing an interphase plasmon excitation. Typically an interphase plasmon will appear at an energy intermediate between the surface plasmons of the two phases. Its intensity will grow as the island phase grows laterally but will eventually disappear as the interface retreats below the thickening island layer. [Pg.330]

The reduced oxidation near sample corners is related to these stress effects, either by retarded diffusion or modified interfacial reactionsManning described these stresses in terms of the conformational strain and distinguished between anion and cation diffusion, and concave and convex surfaces. He defined a radial vector M, describing the direction and extent of displacement of the oxide layer in order to remain in contact with the retreating metal surface, where ... [Pg.982]

Condensate purification In some boiler systems the condensate returning is retreated using ion exchange to minimise corrosion and deposit accumulation. This particularly applies to once-through boilers (mainly nuclear) where there may be no water/steam separator and perhaps limited facilities for blow-down. Additionally, some high heat-flux boilers (oil-fired) have been fitted with condensate polishing plant (CPP). [Pg.835]

Despite its simple local rule base, EINSTein has an impressive repertoire of emergent collective behaviors forward advance, frontal attack, local clustering, penetration, retreat, attack posturing, containment, flanking maneuvers. Guerrilla-like assaults, among many others. [Pg.596]

By carrying out this combination of semi-empirical procedures and retreating from the pure Thomas-Fermi notion of a uniform electron gas it has actually been possible, somewhat surprisingly, to obtain computationally better results in many cases of interest than with conventional ab initio methods. True enough, calculations have become increasingly accurate but if one examines them more closely one realizes that they include considerable semi-empirical elements at various levels. From the purist philosophical point of view, or what I call "super - ab initio" this means that not everything is being explained from first principles. [Pg.105]
